Anybody have a factory procedure for adjusting them for placement? Or do I have to crack open one of my DC motor /generator books and figure something out?Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:i would leave the rack alone. if you turn it too far, you will burn something up.

Reply:Facing the exciter end of the generator, rotate each brush holder stud clockwise untill all insulator clearance is taken up.  Position the brush backing plate .030 to .090 from the commutator.  Then tighten the stud mounting bolt. (I don't remember the correct torque.)  Make sure the gap between the backing plate and comutator is even over the whole length.Lincoln usually puts a drill mark in the joint between the brush rack and bearing housing.  This drill mark should be lined-up to set the rack back to original factory position.  Don't overtighten the rack clamp screw.  70 in-lbs torque is good.If parts have been replaced, (making the original factory mark invalad) setting the rack correctly (per factory specification) is much more difficult. It will require a specification sheet from Lincoln, Load bank, and an experienced technician.Cheers,Bob
Reply:How long do you think about 120 feet of # 6 steel wire with taps about every 10 feet would last as a load bank? About 60 feet should give me 1/10th of an ohm. I figure 1/10th should pretty much give me full output on an sa-200Joewww.CummingsHauling.com

Reply:You know I was thinking of hooking a scope up to one just to see how smooth a DC output the machine has.As far as a load bank goes #6 steel wire is .0.001618 ohm per foot. With an SA 200 cranking full tilt we are only talking about 10 KW. Air cooling should work fine. It would work nicely for doing things like getting carb jetting and timing right on.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
