I've been stuck on Stick for too long and needed to get back and practice my TIG welding of AL. Stick is my first love and my other welding processes suffer because of it. I probably shouldn't have wired brushed it before taking this picture. Next time I'll leave it as is. I'm using pure tungsten 3/32 electrode on 1/8 material. Sync 200 set to 150 amps, balance 7. Argon regulator set to 15 PSI. OK, first question,  what causes the bead to have those tiny bumps?  And a finish that is not shiny? Brushing it didn't help. By the way, it's 4043 3/32 filler rod. It's a beautiful day here, so I may not be able to respond until later tonight. Thanks. Reply:Cold. And not clean enough to start.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:The sandy looking surface comes from overheating the material, usually because you either are going too slow, or your amps are too low.150 amps is doable for 1/8", but you have to mash the pedal to the floor to get the puddle to form as fast as possible, then FLY, backing off the heat as you go to maintain the puddle and adjust for the piece heating up. If you try to creep up on the puddle like you can with steel, going slow, you get what you see here.I prefer to run higher than 150 amps on 1/8", but we use 150 at the school so the students can simply hammer the pedal to the floor to start. I prefer to run 180-200 and hit the pedal, but you need to react faster as soon as the puddle forms before you blow a big hole in things..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for everyone's advice. Can't remember what the base al alloy is. I'll have to ask the supplier. I have a tendency of using the same technique on Al as I do on steel. Can't do that. Plus I "baby" the machine too much. I guess I'll have to crank the amps up and not worry about it. I'll give that 5356 a try also.Miller Bobcat 250Syncrowave  200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.
Reply:You leaned on that wire brush pretty hard after you welded it didn't you? Looks cold as mentioned. Two turn tables and a microphone.
