hello guys, ok yesterday was trying to weld with stick and was trying to build a table, using a 1/8 rod with 140 amp i think, after trying i realize i'm making hole in the metal. it was a 2x2 square metal, i tried 160 amp and still does it. now what's causing the hole? i don't stuck the rod to the metal but it's close. any idea what i'm doing WRONG? thanks
Reply:Way too many amps. You don't mention you thickness of base metal, is it thick enough for that diameter of rod?Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:Yeah what's the thickness of the metal? You're probably running too many amps and if you blow through metal you normally turn the amps down unless you're jamming the rod through the puddle.Miller also has an app to help you it on the amps for the metal thickness. What rod are you running too? Maybe go to a thinner one too.Sent from my SCH-I545 using TapatalkBuilding a 94 crew cab Chevy long bed dually welding truck. Reply:What machine are you using, what rods, need more information to help you. I think you should be running your welder in the 110 amp range give or take a few depending on what rod your using.
Reply:Why would you turn it up???If you burn holes, turn it down!!What is the wall thickness???What machine, rods, and polarity???Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:ok this is my welder. i was wrong about the rod, i was using without noticing it, it's a 3/32 6013 at 140 to 160 amp. the thickness of metal is 1/8. today i bough new rods 1/8 6013. the welder is a 4 KVA runs at 3300,3500 rpm. u can adjust the idle and speed of engine also. hope this help.
Reply:Well,3/32 6013 should be run 60-90amps.....140-160amps, is like a gouging torch.Turn it down to 80amps, with the 3/32 6013, or about 110-130amps with the 1/8 rod.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:A little on the hot side!
Reply:Turn your amps way down. When you are cranked up that high you're just going to blow holes in thinner material. Turn your machine down, do a lot of practice on some scrap, then build your table.Hobart Stickmate LX235AC/160DCRanger 305GVictor 315 O/A rigHope to acquire in the next couple of years: Hypertherm PM45 and Dynasty 200DX
