It seems I will need to buy some more aluminum tig rods.Lots of different thicknesses for practice. Oh, and the welds on the rusty shelf are not mine...
Reply:Pretty general, you don't give a lot of information. It sounds like gas coverage to me. Jody Collier has done a number of videos on the subject. Check them out. I would think 15 CFH of argon is a good place to start. Though I've never heard of back purging with aluminum, balling up without wetting is often a question of coverage. Lots of factors can influence gas coverage. I like a gas lens, but recently had a problem with outside corner joints in 16 gauge not providing adequate coverage. Switching to a collet body and #6 cup helped. Too much or too little flow, too much stick out, torch angle too flat, or arc aimed in the wrong point can influence. I find it easier to heat the leading edge of the puddle than ahead of it. It's no fun to grind tungsten, but a short arc length can sometimes solve problems.
