Dozens of smoker / barbecue builds found here, but no chile roaster. I'll add one. Lived in Phoenix for 8 years. Chile roasters were common.  Here in Montana, no one here has ever heard of them. No idea what they are, or why you would want one. Roast chiles, onions, cherry tomatoes, squash, tomatillos, garlic, eggplant, corn-on-the-cob, etc. My all time favorite: Green chile stew.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...01#post4317101 Design & Build notesIt's small, but suits my needs.  My usual design criteria is "functional & inexpensive". Material on hand or salvage. Mostly shop scrap. The tumbler was from a commercial deep fryer basket and lid - harvested from the trash.  You can easily make one using 1/2" 16g flattened expanded metal. Tumbler:12" diameter, 16" wide, all stainless. Had to weld the lid to the basket, wanted it clean and flush. My first SS experience, it was a challenge. MM185, 0.030 ER308, tri-mix (90% He, 7.5% Ar, 2.5% Co2). Used settings much lower than the book suggested. Form a puddle and get moving or it burns thru. Very minimal scrap to practice with. Burned beads on every inch of scrap, then went for it. I'm happy with the result. Not food service grade, but its functional. Burner:Roasting chiles requires a ferocious heat source, fast & hot.1" Black pipe, .035 MIG tips for gas nozzles,  2" car exhaust pipe to funnel the flames. Propane.Too many roasters are underpowered. Not this one.(Note, the pic with burners lit is just for effect. When I'm actually roasting, its turned up. WAY up.)  Frame:1-1/4" square tube.  MM185,  030 wire,  C25 Last edited by FORTEALLOY; 06-18-2014 at 09:30 PM.Reason: add recipie linkHobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?

Reply:Very nice.  I wondered how those worked.  How many chili's do you roast at one time?
Reply:That's nice, I'm going to build one. It never occurred to my feeble mind to make a smaller version hand crank, which is actually what I need. Thanks! The one pictured is at a store in SE New Mexico, does a bushel at a time in 3 to 4 minutes with the electric motor, gear reducer & a larger version of your propane burner. Reply:FORTE'Just so happens I'm one of your fellow Montuckians that's also a bit of a chile head.   If this years harvest is any thing like last years I should have plenty of Anahiems for roasting this coming September.  This is just a fraction of last years pickings and I put twice as many Anahiem plants in this year because roasted Green chile sauce is such a good thing. Been using a Trager pellet smoker to make my own chipoltes.
Reply:You weird southerners....   Who the hell needs a Chili roaster?         ...Just kidding...    Thats amazing, and I love peppers, and everything food from the southwest!
