So let's say that there are times I want some spare shielding gas available for MIG on the weekend or when I just don't feel like driving 30 miles round trip to town during business hours to swap a 150 ft bottle of C25?Yeah, I already know straight CO2 works ok for most nonstructural stuff and also it's benefits and limitations, but I'd like to have a larger bottle of it beyond the small paintball stuff available at Tractor Supply....Plus I also know I'd need to change the valve.My questions concerns how much weld time can I expect from a bottle of CO2?.....I know CO2 turns liquid when compressed into a gas bottle and they sell/refill the bottles by weight-not cubic foot......So ferinstance, how many CF of shielding gas per LB of CO2 can I expect out of let's say a 20LB bottle of CO2?Thanks, Gents

Reply:Re: larger CO2 supplies, try local business that do soda fountains or vending machines. They use tanks about 3ft tall, and maybe you can work with them to swap bottles thru them. Generally they use a lot and have a regular schedule for refill.

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to keep a 2nd bottle of C25 on hand? You are going to refill the current one when it runs out anyway. Then have to swap the welder back to the 'normal' gas supply.Seems silly to me to have a whole backup system when a just a spare bottle will do.

Reply:You don't need to swap out the valve. You do need an adapter and a plastic washer. 20# CO2 will last you a long time- * of course it lasts the same but it is a very small bottle compared to a 174CF bottle.You don't need a big CO2 bottle, might as well just get a couple 20lbers.
