need to build a h or a frame lift, can anyone help with load capacity on wide flange beamswhat size beam to use for 2 ton capacity 10' long beam with upright under each end and load at 5' or center                                      2 ton capacity 20' long beam with upright under each end and load at 10' or centerthanks.
Reply:I've posted some information in the past with some links:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...91#post3058291Myself, I normally calculate my maximum acceptable deflection using span/650 and then select a beam that deflects less than that value when loaded at the mid point. This will ensure the beam doesn't sag too much and cause issue with the trolley. In your case 240"/650 = 0.369" deflection. Based on the desired maximum deflection you need a beam that has a moment of inertia above 110. Smallest wide beam would likely be a W 8 x 31 for the 20' span. Most trolleys run on S beams which an S 10 x 25.4 would be another option. The flanges and narrower and thicker. Standard disclaimer. I'm not an engineer. YMMV.
