Hey so I have a job to do on a excavator gripper. Basically it's got 4 fingers on one side and 4 on the other so it can grab things. Just like a thumb attachment on a bucket. Anyway the teeth are worn out and I am replacing them. I will be putting reinforcement on the back sides of them. The man getting me to do the job thinks I need to hard face these. I personally don't think I need to. Yes there will be some rubbing on concrete and rubbish(rubbish removal company). The teeth may rub on concrete or other hard surfaces now and then. I'm thinking I use 11018 rod for the job. I really don't think hard facing is necessary. What do you guys think? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Looking at it through the eyes of a guy who gets paid to replace the teeth. No don't hard face. Looking through the eyes of the guy who owns the equipment, yes hard face everything that is in contact.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:probably no need to use 11018 filler rod either.  Unless you know that the material you're welding is high strength plate; A514 or AR material.    7018 is fine for mild steel.  8018 filler rod is OK too if you just can't resist the feeling you need a higher strength rod.Hardfacing the wear surfaces is another story.  I'll second the recommendations to hardface anything that sees contact with the rubbish/debris the equipment is moving.  If you're not certain what to use, call one of the big wire manufacturer's customer support lines and ask for their recommendation.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Get some expert advice from one of the hardfacing suppliers.   You won't be back to buy their product if it doesn't work.   People often hardface all over which can be a mistake.  If you want something to hold a sharp edge then you hardface one side only.  The hard part much like your fingernail will hold the edge while the flesh part will wear away.  All the time the operator has a sharp edge.  If both sides are hardfaced then the tooth will become rounded as both sides wear at the same rate.....And while you are at it ask the supplier about preheat and postheat .... or in some cases interpass temps.  Some hard teeth do not like welding on them.
Reply:Ok bad drawing but you guys get the idea. So the front of the teeth will be getting most of the wear. The rear of the teeth will have some backing on to help strength. The only welding done will be on the back side. And that's wear he wants to hard face. As I can see, the back side doesn't get nearly as much use as the teeth and front side. Even tho the term "customer is always right" I still think saving him the money is a better way to go and just explain to him why you wouldn't need it. When posing this thread I was leaning towards not using hard facing. Still am but like to hear what you guys think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Attached Images
Reply:When I hire someone to do something they need to do it. It may not be necessary to hard face. But if the customer wants it done then the customer wants it done.Hobart Stickmate LX235AC/160DCRanger 305GVictor 315 O/A rigHope to acquire in the next couple of years: Hypertherm PM45 and Dynasty 200DX
