I think it would be interesting to see/learn and discuss the procedures, challenges, the results and lessons learned by those special few that are involved in the construction and repair of ASME and equal ISO stuff.....Fired and unfired pressure vessels and power piping and feed water piping, and Rail Road tank cars, and the often exotic materials used, and often unique procedures and unusual techniques required to manage successful weldments. I remember my time in naval nuclear submarine shipyards when a grizzled old welder would arrive with his bag and then hang from a rope swing upside down and using mirrors to weld up a super thick walled section of piping made from copper nickle or nickle copper or monel or moly steel or stainless and how those welds would pass full xray first time every time...and how my very life then depended on his welds once out there super deep and thousands of miles away for many months.Where are the guys who do that today?...Do you haunt here?
Reply:I am one of those welders. Or...I was. Now I teach nuclear and non-nuclear tig pipe welding. I still have my Navsea 250-1500 pipe quals.I've welded all of those alloys you mention, as well as others...In my own business, I've welded over 130 steam boilers used in the hobby steam boiler industry, and used in personal steam boat construction. I've since given up that account...Too many "I"'s in my post...not good...this information usually doesn't get divulged, but since you asked...Rich
Reply:I fab and weld non fired heat exchangers in an asme shop. A few of the more experienced guys weld exotics, but I have only 3 years in...so I stick to carbon & stainless steels.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8

Reply:Asme code shop boilermaker here. We build coal fired stuff.  Mainly superheaters but also burner panels and water walls etc. I run orbital welding equipment on boiler tube for the most part.  Qualified in about 70 wps's and procedures. Lots of high alloy nickel chrome stuff. Welding a code case material right now, Super 304.
