According to the eBay listing, these little metal fans ranged in size from 2" to the largest in the center at 5.5" in diameter. The seller described them as being small motor fans but there was no mention of what types of small motors they came from. Not my photo. ----I missed out on buying the little fans. I could have really used a few of them for a project and could have set the others aside for other projects. I'd like to be able to buy one right now in the 3" to 4" size however I can't search for them using small motor fan because I'm getting a gazillion matches. If anyone can help me narrow my search by telling me these are computer fans or whatever, it would be really great.--I'm particularly interested in the rustiest looking little metal fan that appears on top to the left of the larger black metal fan but admittedly like them all.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Most of those look like they might be impellers for some sort of mixers.  Food?  Paint or chemical?DanI hope that when i'm dead and gone, people will remember me and think; "Boy, that guy sure owed me a lot of money!"
Reply:Lot of the drill/grinder motors have a fan similar. Reply:Those are indeed electric motor cooling fans, at least the ones around the outside, not so sure about the large center one. They mount on the shaft of the motor and blow cool air across it when it is running.Where you been lately? Haven't seen you post in a LOOOOONNNNGGG time. Thought you must have fell off the edge of the world or worse.  How are the welding lessons coming along?
Reply:Equilibrium,Glad to see you're back!Hope all is well.Hurry up and get some of those fans and show us some art!!DB
Reply:The smaller ones you would probably find pressed onto the armatures of small open or drip proof motors. If you can find someone close working on or scrapping electric motors, they could be a source. they aren't worth much for scrap so maybe they would let you have them cheap. Good luck.Depending what size you want, small tool repair people could also be a source or burned out flea market tools.http://eurtonelectric.com/catalog/ar...00_most_models---Meltedmetal
Reply:They can be found on any electric motor marked "TEFC" or totally enclosed fan cooled. Try electric motor rebuild shops.RegardsDave

Reply:Hey Equilibrium. Not exactly the same stuff but will these help out? I was going to do a post later and title it "Flowers for a Lady" and post the pict. I have at least another 1/2 dozen or more valves to strip and add to the pile. Some steel, some die cast as well as your 2 8" "torpedoes".I'll check and see if the dead drill I have has any fan parts inside that you can use. If so, I'll toss them on the pile as well. I don't think I still have any other motors on hand right now, but I'll try and check..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:skyboltone> impeller isn't a word that was in my vocabulary so thanks for mentioning it. I looked up pump + impeller and found some really interesting pieces, https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/...&hsimp=yhs-001. I also looked up air +  conditioner + impeller and found quite a few that might work if I'm not capable of finding one with more blades, https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/...&hsimp=yhs-001--I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass on that lovely $17k titanium impeller you found for me. I haven't been taught how to weld anything but steel. --Sandy> I tried to get a look-see inside my drill but couldn't without taking it apart. I have found that most of the little fans are plastic and that simply won't do. --"Dang guys, I've been setting all that kind of stuff out for my scrappers guys down the road. My lil woman just informed me how "wrong" that is." Oh my!!! She is so right. Here is a direct link to the listing for the little fans I wanted to buy, http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Steampunk-...item3aafff9932. Based on what I've seen, all one must do is add the word "steampunk" to their listing and all this little stuff sells in the blink of an eye. If you ever run across any more, please contact me if you remember and have a spare moment. I'd happily pay for a 4" metal fan with lots of blades on it from you rather than from somebody on eBay or a junkyard. --Bisteneau> Ding ding ding!!! electric + motor + cooling + fan has the most images that look like they might work for me, https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/...hspart=mozilla --Welding lessons are going well!!! My teacher took me back!!! Yay!!! Last time we welded I made a wind chime out of an old helium tank. It needs a finishing touch of a "hangy" thing and then it's done. Soon as I figure out how to get photos from my camera onto the computer, I'll post a photo for you. I'm getting much better at using angle grinders to cut metal. Actually, I'm much better at everything and if I screw up... he finds a "fix" so I get to learn from screw ups too. --labparamour> Yes, I'm back.  All is well and I'm oh sooooooo happy to be welding again. It was hard walking out into the garage seeing all my new "toys" collecting dust but... I've got a list of things to make up for lost time. No art per se other than a pumpkin out of horseshoes for me and several things I want to make to drop off at that county nursing home. They really enjoyed what I've given them so far and all of it is in common areas for the residents to enjoy. The hearts were probably the biggest hit because they hung bird feeders off them over the winter. --Meltedmetal> I stopped in at a place this morning that I know usually has a lot of scrap laying around. I looked for anything that might have a small metal fan in it and the man's pile was down to almost nothing. Doesn't mean the next place won't have them though. --"Most of the type of fans in the original picture look like interior motor cooling fans to me. That said, either type would do for the intended purpose depending on the eye of the artist. And, I'll second motor rebuild shops as a source." Nooooo problem with an interior cooling fan. I have a brand new Bosch angle grinder compliments of my welding teacher who spotted it at a community garage sale and I'm NOT afraid to use it any more. --smilindave> "Try electric motor rebuild shops" Thank you so much!!! That's going on my to-do list for tomorrow morning because I know where there are two small engine repair shops that aren't that far away. One of them let's me dumpster dive behind their shop so it's always fun stopping in there. --gxbxc> That little fan you mentioned was my 2nd favorite. So far... no sheet metal lessons though.  Some day. --wb4rt> Ahhh... no worries about a little metal fan. I'll find one, it's only a matter of time now that I know the words to use. --I'm really happy to be welding again and back posting again. And, it's so nice seeing so many of my favorite "people" in my fan thread that you have no idea!!!--DSW> Those two torpedoes are mine mine mine mine mine!!! Big time happy dance! I collected 5 metal cigar tubes and not a one of them was the same. I need those soooooooo bad for the submarine I'm making for our youngest son. I'm so incredibly excited looking at them in your photo... they're prefect. I have to ask what they really are though? I've not seen anything like them on any of my metal scavenging hunts. Do you realize how perfect those are? Thank you. Thank you so much! And those two gears.... one to experiment with would be great but I want to be a greedy little pig.... I want every one of those valves you have please. I still owe the nursing home a center piece for the rotary garden that I promised them last year and I found some really interesting ideas online that could be built upon to make a really interesting paper weight for myself of "flowers". I have a bunch of knives I bought at GoodWill that could be used for petals. This is very exciting to me. I can't thank you enough for remembering I wanted to make a few "floral arrangements". Don't forget to let me know how much $$$ to send you for postage and what ever.--Notsooldendum> I tried a search using those words and it came back with a gazillion hits. I found ways to narrow it down though so I'm a very happy camper. I'll have a little metal fan blade in no time flat. --Interesting new avatar you have there. It's like pictures of Jesus that some of my friends have on their walls.... no matter where I go... their pictures stare at me.  --And now... it's time for me to get back outside and weed for a few hours. This is the 1st year in 12 years that I didn't have a garden and the weeds are out of control. They're so bad I'm probably going to have to lay black 6mm plastic over them to solarize what's taken root so I can get a fresh start next spring.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I am so excited about the torpedoes you have no idea!!!--This photo probably doesn't belong here in a fan thread but... I just started playing with "floral arrangements". I didn't realize so many of the old valves were aluminum and I don't know how to weld that. Two of the three I had in my "stash" were aluminum so I need to experiment a little on how best to attach them to rod. I'm also starting to play with leaves. I think I'm liking the rocker arms best for leaves but only have a limited amount of those and would prefer making flowers out of them. What fun and I'm not even a flowery type person. --MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Simple solution to those alum or pot metal handles would be to simply insert a screw thru the hole and then weld it to your stock, so you weld steel to steel. It's even easier if you can drill a hole in your stem, then put the steel screw thru that and weld that at the back to your stock. That would even allow your "flower" to spin.Butter knife blades would make decent leaves. Also you could simply cut leaves out of sheet metal if you wanted. Thin sheet can be worked cold with hammers, chisels and so on to add texture if you want. Thin sheet like 20-22 ga will easily cut with tin snips. Copper flashing would also be easy to work cold. Attachment would require soldering to the steel. I have a couple small projects that will probably use steel/copper if I have time to play this weekend.Unfortunately I haven't had time to mail your box yet, but I hope to do so after the holiday. It's been WAY too hot lately do do much outside, let alone fire up the forge..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:DSW> "Simple solution to those alum or pot metal handles would be to simply insert a screw thru the hole and then weld it to your stock, so you weld steel to steel." That's exactly what I did to two of the flowers. One of them was actually steel so there was no fuss to welding a stem to that valve handle. --It's hard to see in that crappy photo from my phone but I had been experimenting with what to use for leaves so there's a spoon, butter knife, and a rocker arm in the photo. I am leaning toward using butter knives for leaves. --It sure has been hot in some parts of the US. Down in Southern IL, it was in the low to mid 90's for the past five days. No worries at all about the box.... I wouldn't want to be out driving around in this heat either. I've got plenty of metal to play with and more than a year to finish the submarine!!!--Sandy> Here's another listing for steampunk fans, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lot-...item419c272685. The seller is about $20 high for steampunkers though. He'll probably relist at a more reasonable dollar amount when it doesn't sell. From what I've seen, the little metal fans with multiple blades sell for about $1.50 - $2 each when offered in multiples of 4 to 10 in one listing which is still a lot more than they'd get if they scrapped their parts.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I agree, they look like electric motor cooling fans. For the newer ones, you can check sites selling motor products, since they list the full names of the fans: https://www.mrosupply.com/search/?q=fan and google them for pictures. For the cute old one, can't help.
Reply:Thanks Rina. That MROSupply is a tough site.... for me at least it is....  no photos. Unfortunately, I'm a visual person since I'm not familiar with fans. I think this is one of those deals where I'll know what I like when I see it and... the older and rustier the better. --Say, I see this is your 1st post. Reply:I bought two of these metal fans for $5 each and one for $4. They're much larger at 17 & 18" diameters than what I need for the project I had in mind when I went looking for little metal fans  You're welcome. It's always nice to see new people posting. I dunno if you're aware of it or not however there is an 'Introduce Yourself' forum you might like, http://weldingweb.com/forumdisplay.p...oduce-Yourself -- Do you weld?MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:You would find smaller fans on bigger, like 20-50 horsepower electric motorsThat big alum thing on the front of those fans should be a clutch pack that you can remove..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
