Found this on CL and before I buy wanna make sure its still in date. Already called the local gas companies and they will trade ox for argon so Im good there.
Reply:Welcome to the forums, AK! Hydrostatic tests are good for 5 years, so it looks like that cylinder expired at the end of March. If your supplier will swap an owner oxygen for an argon, it's a crapshoot whether or not they'll notice the test date. What does the CL seller want for the bottle? Maybe offer him whatever his sell price is, less the cost of a hydro test (that you may not get charged for)...?
Reply:Thanks for the info. He is asking 100 bucks for itAccording to this if it has a start stamped next to it, its good for 10 years?http://www.airgas.com/content/detail...=7000000000243Last edited by akcooper9; 05-14-2014 at 10:16 AM.
Reply:When I brought owner oxy / acetylene bottles for refill (to the company marked on the neck ring), they swapped the bottles and didn't even look at hydro dates.$100 is a good price for a 150 cf bottle. Even if you paid $25 for a hydro you'd still be ahead or even, imho. Can't hurt to offer the guy $80... if you're the only responsible guy to get back to him, if his wife has been bugging him to get rid of it, whatever.
Reply:Can't go wrong for the money. Always offer less you can always increase offer.
Reply:That cylinder expires in 2019. The test date was 3/09 and the star next to it means it is a 10 year test. The + means it can be over filled by 10%.  The 2015 in the 2nd pic is the rated pressure.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Good catch, I missed the star.
Reply:Its a done deal. He wanted 125 I offered 100...done. Pick up friday. Then off to swap for argon and get away from flux core welding.I was looking for a Q Size tank but hey for the price Ill take a bigger tank.Did anyone notice the[][][][]On it? Tank has been around and has some history I take it.
Reply:You got a good deal there, bud.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:At one time that four box pattern meant that additional "legs" were added to cover swastikas after WW II, but is that cylinder old enough? It appears at the 1973 test, and the Nazis were out of business by then.
Reply:Its a done deal. Tank is in the car. Will exchange today for some c25!Thanks everyone for the help
Reply:You did WELL !!!!!
Reply:Gravel nailed it.
Reply:Originally companies had a symbol used to identify who did hydro testing on a cylinder. I'm betting the boxed plus at the top is one of those. Now companies use a 4 digit "square" as seen between the 3 and the 09 in the 1st pict or 6 and the 97 on the lower hydro date shown in the 3rd picture..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I really appreciate all the help. I stopped by a LWS (Praxair) and they swapped me ox for c25 no problem no questions asked. Tank ended up being 150CF. Im in to the whole deal for 140 bucks. Guys buying from them etc was normally a 300+ dollar deal plus tax. Im happy. Now to finish the weld cart.
