Hello..I am trying to teach myself to weld pipe.I don't have to much trouble on top but am having trouble on the bottom of the pipe.Trouble seeing what I am doing and reaching that far underneath.I can't find any video on youtube that shows what body movements or hand movements to use.Any suggestions?

It may give you some ideas.Have you given any consideration to standing on something to weld the top quadrants of your coupon? That may give you some room to get comfortable on the overhead welds.Lincoln Electric:Ranger GXT 250SA-200LN-25Pro MiG 256Pro Mig 180Esab CV 251Invertec 160Victor Torches
Reply:Are you welding in jack stands? Easiest way when I learned was to get it close enough to the ground I could lay underneath. Waist height takes a lot more practice to become real comfortable. I rest my left arm on a stand and tuck my right elbow in/on my right knee
Reply:I often wondered about this my self. In the end a guy will end up doing what he is most comfortable with but there has to be somewhere out there a technical explanation of proper movement.
Reply:Thank you Excalibur.I will try standing on something.Do you think during a welding test they would let me stand on something? Thanks Rifleco.I am practicing inside a shop. You say you rest your left arm.Are you holding the stinger with one hand then? Also when you weld laying on the ground are you able to weld from 6 to 3oclock position on 6" pipe without stopping.Quite the stretch for me.I have a short neck. When you guys move down underneath the pipe(3 to 6 oclock root) do you think you bend your knees and waists or your necks and shoulders?
Reply:First thing is... as far as a test goes.. you put the pipe where you want it.Now my general rule is about waist height.. or a bit higher, maybe my belly button. For GTAW (usually the root/hot pass) I will get on one knee and lean over until my head is underneath the pipe. That way, when I start welding, the joint is horizontal in front of my eyes. From there I weld it like it's a 2G... even though it's overhead. If you get what I'm saying. GET UNDERNEATH THE PIPE. Don't try and watch it from the side. When it comes to stick.. I do the same thing only I'm sitting underneath and the pipe is going perpendicular to me... the joint looks like it's vertical over my head. And I weave my heart away.If you need somewhere to prop an arm (stick welding)... while you're sitting underneath you can prop an elbow on your knee, or on the pipe itself.
Reply:Hello Akabadnews..Thanks for the info.I take it you mean Top of pipe being about waist high.I will have to think about what you mean when you say THE JOINT IS HORIZONTAL in front of my eyes.I don't quite catch on to that. |
