What are typical test specifications for this?  6" pipe, schedule 40, 37.5° bevel, nickel sized land?I don't have any 6" pipe on hand, but plenty of 2" schedule 40.  Would the setup be the same for either one?  How much gap and what amperage would you run for 1/8" 6011/ 7018?Thanks.
Reply:2" pipe is going to be a lot harder to run than 6". If you are trying to learn, get yourself the larger pipe to start out with..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:go to your local fab shops ... they all routinely scrap out their short stuff.  We dont keep much of anything under 2' long because we never use it.  offer to buy their scrap at scrap price or tell them you are trying to practice to be a better welder and some of them will give it to you for free.  6" will be easier, 37.5*, gap and land usually have a little play.  i prefer a tighter gap and smaller land, 3/32 on both.  most TIG tests i have taken were either sch 40 or 160 ... most stick tests were sch 80.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:Start on plate....minimum 3/8" thick.  So much easier to learn technique.
Reply:I know 6" pipe will be easier, and I have done open root with plate.  Of course, I plan on running some more plate and 6" pipe as well to get better.  However, I want to make sure I have everything right for the future.  I would like to eventually practice with the 2" pipe as well.  I'm sure it can be stick welded so, I'm just curious if it would it be setup the same way as for 6" pipe and around what amperage you would run on it.  Does not change because wall thickness is the same? Also, I made a mistake; the pipe I already have is schedule 80, not 40.
Reply:On tests, is it always alllowable to have a land, or can this be disallowed depending on the inspector?  How much can the gap vary?Last edited by LeviC; 10-05-2015 at 07:37 PM.
Reply:Land is allowed, you don't want a whole lot of gap for stick root.
