Got a job coming up at an indoor range replaceing the damaged sections of the deceleration tube on bullet traps. They are pretty neat there is a big v that directs the bullets into this tube where they impact the side and spin till the fall into a bucket below  It's all done per what the manufacture says. I'm plasma cutting out a 6 inch or so vertical section where the paint is popped off and the steel is worn through and welding in a replacement peace or bent ar500. I'm thinking overlap the spot where the bullets impact so my welds and cuts are away from where the bullets impact. Any advise on welding/cutting ar500? I'm thinking just open root the joint with 6010 and fill with 7018. Preheat to 200 f and keep interpass to less than 400f.  The back needs to be ground smooth so the bullets will spin in the tube. You can see the impact area where the pait is chipped off its about 3 inches ide by 38 tall. Can also see where they tried to plug a hole with some flux core  yep that worked out well. Last edited by darlingtonfarm; 07-10-2014 at 08:01 AM.
Reply:Wear a respirator,  the inside of that puppy is probably coated with lead by now...MillerMatic 252, HTP 221 w/cooler, Hypertherm PM45, Lincoln IdealArc 250 AC/DC"I'd like to believe as many true things and as few false things as possible"
Reply:You're going to need to keep the patch flush with the inside of the tube. So as to prevent any potential ricochet situations. Full penetration welds should be good enough not to need any overlap. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:I don't make bullet traps, but ive made lots of steel targets both with A36 and AR500.  I use my plasma torch because it doesn't create such a large HAZ "footprint," as does oxy/fuel.  I've been concerned in the past with AR500 loosing some of it's tempering/hardness qualities around the cut edges, if an oxy/fuel torch was used instead of plasma.  I'd use 3/32" 7018 with the AR500.   Then again, I can't see in the pics exactly how thick of AR500 you're welding on.On a side note I've discovered early on that for strictly handgun calibers, A36 3/8" with a slight angle, withstands handgun sizes up to .44mag, with no deformation.  Any caliber bigger or shot out of a rifle, or even thinner steel and it deforms with bullet impact.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:The traps are 3/8 inch I was thinking 1/8th 5p+ and 1/8 Excalibur 7018 or 8018 on the fence on that one

Reply:I was going to v the patch and do the open root with 6010 and fill with 7018.Yep actually have a speedglass 9100fx adflo coming for this job.

Reply:Yep excited, been wanting one for a while.
Reply:Darlington, wear some coveralls too so when you come back out from working inside and around all that lead, you don't track it back into your pickup work truck.  Lead poisoning sucks from working at an indoor range.  Welding on one has got to suck even more without ALL of the PPE.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Thanks, I was planning on wearing a tyvec suit with coveralls over and toss both once the job is over along with the gloves and any thing else.
Reply:Be very careful about lead exposure and contamination.  http://www.king5.com/news/cities/bel...207442461.html
Reply:Sounds like Darlington is going to go full "spacesuit" by taking the necessary precautions (ie. PPE).  Coupled with the fact that he's not going to be subjected to "long-term" exposure on this job, he should be fine.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Got my new 9100fx adflo today and its amazing. It's got the big xx filter all I can say is wow this is amazing. You have enough peripheral vision you can walk around with it down and not trip over stuff and the clarity when welding is killer.
Reply:Kick @zz Darlington!!!!  Now I can't wait to see you weld some of your HUGE 6013's or 7024's with some serious SMOKE in your face!  In fact, weld on a piece of scrap galvanized pipe or something with your giant 7024's,  just to get an enormous smoke plume!!!   .  I don't care about what the weld bead looks like because we all know that nothing burns through galvanized zinc like a 5p+ or 6011.   I just wanna see lots of smoke around your "space helmet!"  Please make a video on that!   Thanks!Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Funny can do, mabe be a bit though. Need to finish the welding bed I started this week and am booked up for next. Forget kissing but trying to get cabinet and woodworking jobs, welding and metal is where it's at.
Reply:Loaded up to work on the traps in the morning ended up renting this pro 300 to run a plasma cutter and I gotta say for 7018 I like it better than my red face. I do not like how it runs 6010 seems like the ocv is too low even on the 6010 setting. Runs like a Lincoln with the engine rpms set too low.
Reply:After spending the day stewing in a tyvec suit and welding jacket I got it all finished. I ended up filling with 6010 because the customer was amazed that it looked to pretty. Dient figure it made a difference since this is not really subjected to much stress. I forgot to take any pictures but you could see a line where the old ar 500 had been worn through by however many hundred thousand rounds.
Reply:How bad was the welding inside? Was there a layer of lead?
Reply:Yep lots of lead, I just did an open root and filled so I dident have to mess with doing any thing on the back side
