Hey all. I tried to make a welding cart over the weekend with less than satisfactory results. I consider myself a beginner but decent welder especially with TIG but I have made similar square rectangular framed things before that have come out nice. I did everything to the best of my knowledge and ability and I just couldn't get the thing to stay square which was really upsetting to me. The material was .065 walled 1" square tube. I was using my Hobart EZ tig at I believe around 45 amps, Ill have to check when I get home. Im hoping it was because I was using thin walled stuff, but I have seen things built with that before and it seemed all well and good. I built a brew stand for my buddy using 11 gauge 2" square tubing with MIG and that came out mint. No matter how I clamped this thing or how much I jumped around it kept pulling it in both planes. Also my TIG beads are really tiny. I was 1/16" filler ER70S-2. If I use something a little larger will my beads be wider? I could get pics if needed later on tonight.Last edited by Threadkiller; 10-13-2015 at 10:48 AM.
Reply:Jody has a really good video on distortion. Might be worth checking out, if you haven't. I hope he does some follow up videos.
Reply:I would tell you to maybe make more , tiny and quick tacks, alternating sides of the square tube ....but it sounds like you already did this . :-(

Reply:Set your machine to 100 amps minimum. Tack it up gingerly, but when you weld do it hot and fast. Dwelling in a tiny puddle will just exacerbate the distortion. When your are done pound it straight with a polyurethane dead blow mallet.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:For every action there is a equal and opposite reaction....What I do is tack the OUTSIDE of the tubes...One on each end and two in the middle...Then WELD the inside then go over the outside....Keeps things pretty straight that way.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Good tight fit up will also help have less distortion
Reply:Thank you guys. I will keep all this in mind.
Reply:Weld hot and fast. If you weld slow and cold with tig, your haz increases as does distortion (inexperience makes you think welding slow and cold will minimize heat input or haz).JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720 |
