Hi,My son is in his first semester of a 2 year program for welding at EMCC in Bangor Maine. He said he's now starting 'overhead' welding, and it's alot easier to get burned through his coat. Is there a better jacket he could get, or maybe an undergarment that is more retardent to burning material while welding? thanks,Bill
Reply:Not much better than a leather jacket which I expect he is not wearing now. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a decent one either.

Reply:Leather welding jacket is the best bet. I've been burned many times by spatter that gets in past where the jacket snaps together at the front before. It happens when welding overhead. If you get one of the Radnor ones from Airgas run it through the wash (by itself) 2-3 times before wearing it. Mine turned me yellow/orange the first time I used it. It was at work and I looked like I had lost a fight with a can of spray on tan. I still hear about that...My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:Aside from my pipeliner, my all leather jacket is one of my best investments. Really keeps the heat and splatter off me.
Reply:Leather is about as good as it gets. Either a jacket or cape and bib will be a big help. If the neck area is a problem a leather bib on the hood or go to a monkey hood, that's a leather hood with a welding lens. They are a pan to wear but they do protect the head and neck area.
Reply:I got a bad pigskin/ cotton hybrid and overhead doesn't even burn me anymore as I'm in school also. It's a little pricey, but worth it to me.Lincoln AC-225 90 amp flux core

Reply:In leather after 2X the price goes way up……I think you have to buy the whole cow……….
Reply:I recently bit the bullet and paid for some cow hide, I went with the cape and bib style instead of the jacket. It made a night and day difference in overhead welding. At the full time job they issue out F/R pull on sleeves those made me smile to. http://jtillman.com/products/clothing/leather/3221-14/Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup |
