Anyone got any idea how much amperage loss as a unit warms up is normal?
Reply:Amperage loss relates to voltage loss, on average 5 volts open circuit.cold to hot.Now there is a problem using the ultra low sulfure diesel we all get now. on machines 2006 and below, it would be best to use a diesel lubricant of some sort every tank. tranny oil works (it burns, cleans and lubricates), but does not stop gelling. ask a diesel mech for the best additive available. This will stop the low engine power issues you are experiencing. The new fuel takes out injectors and pumps pretty quick on the older diesels
Reply:CruizerYou are very right about additives. We have a LOT of problems with ULS diesel in the north. This seems to be an electrical problem (if there IS a problem) The operator says after a few minutes welding at 100 Amps or so, it drops off so much he can't strike an arc.  If he shuts it off and lets it cool, it's OK for a while. OCV is OK, max output is OK, speed and engine power are OK I tried it on the load bank and it dropped from about 210 to 191 amps after about an hour, then it stayed at 191 for the rest of the day. Tomorrow I'll try at a lower setting. Field conditions are hard to duplicate in the shop.Brian

Reply:This is DEFINATELY a control bridge issue!!!!Change the control bridge out to a 50 amp 800 volt unit. I generally stick a small heat sink under it.While the old one may test fine with a diode tester, it won't test well with a graphical meter like a huntron or equivelentat at operating temperature.  What happens is that the old bridge may be leaking 1/4 wave AC into the field. This will impair the input signal and drop the output on the unit after it warms up dramatically.Night and day difference on the output!Last edited by Cruizer; 11-28-2008 at 12:08 PM.

Reply:Have you checked your manual's troubleshooting section on the matter?  Possible causes listed are:1) Rough or dirty commutator.2) Brushes may be worn down to limit.3) Brush springs may be broken.4) Field circuit may have variable resistance or intermittent open-circuit, due to poor connection or broken wire.5) Electrode lead or work lead connection may be poor.6) Wrong grade of brushes may have been installed on generator.7) Field rheostat may have poor connection and overheating.I'd be looking at numbers 1), 4) and 7) first but...??MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Check the frequencys on the aux terminals, must be 62Hz high & 43-44hz low RPMwarm engine. If your already starting out too low, the engine has to work harder to maintain rpm
Reply:You want to line up the polarities inside the generator too with the factory punch mark. You can go 1/16" one way or the other, any more and you've got more problems.
