Hello All. I am not sure about the Mig 180 and then the rest of the numbers but I was looking at it, at Airgas. What size generator would you guys use to really run a 200 mig welder like this?  Looking for plenty of power in the welder..What size would you recommend? Any companies to stay away from or really focus with. Not looking to run it everyday maybe 5-8 hours a month.
Reply:What you can do when looking at these various units is to give a glance at the rating panel on the back of the unit and even write down the info as future referrence as food for thought while researching other units and gensets to mate up. What you'll see on the back is an amperage input requirement. This 'input' requirement is usually it's amp draw at it's 'rated ouput'.. The rated output is normally some moderate to upper end output at which the machine will give decent performance for a reasonable length of time. This 'rated output' is usually about the 60% duty cycle area. So the amperage requirement listed on the back isn't the top end needs nor the low end minimum but a pretty good referrence value for use on sizing the input whether commercial power or generated power. Now to have some numbers just for talking purposes we can make some up that will be close. Let's say that 180 amp unit listed the input amps at 22 amps at 230 volts AC. That likely will be about a 60% duty cycle somewhere around 130 amps output. You'll need to decide if that range is adequate for your needs or not. But to the gen sizing issue we take the 22 amps at 230 volts and come up with about 5,000 watts. That means you need a genny that has a 230 volt output of 5,000 RUN watts to operate at that range for any length of time. You decide whether you'll be at that 130 DC amp ouput often and for extended periods or whether you'll be at the lower end most of the time. Then you decide what genset to buy or what your operating limits will be if the genset sizing isn't fully under your control. Anywho, that's how it's done. You'll have to get the input current draw@rated amps@duty cycle info from the location while you're shopping or, as a lot of folks do, download manuals for all the ones you may be looking at and do your big thinking at home in between shopping trips.Last edited by Sandy; 01-01-2009 at 04:11 PM.
Reply:Sandy, Thank you for the advice, I will start crunching numbers and looking at units online and getting some numbers from there and start to narrow stuff hopefully before making my first trip. Thank you for the conversion and how it all works.  I was def. a bit confused. Mike

Reply:I use a honda 5000,  it actually runs only 4500 watts continuous.
Reply:Coleman powermate 5,000...when I was welding on a boat (alum) I really had my 180 maxed out.Did this for 2 days. But I don't think anybody welds non stop.
