We use a lot of computers in my companies business. we mount them in kiosks and the stands that come with them are then scrap. These are huge 6x12"x2" thick heat sinks off some industrial computers. Due to weight we removed them and used fans instead. four of them would make a rectangular tube that would be a great lamp base, unfortunatley that is the only thing creative I can think to use them for and I dont' need any more lamps. I have about 20 of theseThese are off of computers we use in our product. 3 to 5 of them make a flower like pattern. Might be a nice lawn decoration. I would just need to fabricate a base and some round tubing as stems and leaves I have about 20 of these. These boomerang shapes are not pure aluminum they are some kind of die cast. I have about 50 of them. They would be perfect for a skeletal rib cage, but my wife prefers something more elegant. In the past I would just haul this stuff off to the scrap yard for 50 cents a pound. I'm feeling creative, What could I use it for?

Reply:Want to sell some of the heatsinks? I'm in Raleigh. I could use them for electronic projects depending on how much.
Reply:Just a thought your wife might like.... what about taking those boomerang shapes and using them to form a stylized flower? Arrange 3 together with the spikes outward then tack weld them then arrange 3 more and stack them on the first ring for a layered petal effect. Then take those thingies you originally used to form a floral ring and flip them the opposite way you were holding them in your hand to take your photo and use them as leaves? You could weld your leaves in an alternating pattern to whoknowswhat for a stem then top them with your stylized boomerang Bachelor's Button type tiered floral ring. Group them in 3s and stake them in the ground in front of your local nursing home as a "gift" of modern art. --Sorry.... I'm not an artist or a creative brain type and don't have any fancy drawing programs. Hope this quick drawing I photographed helps.--MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:If you're not opposed to selling, I would consider offering up those first heat sinks for sale on some of the DIY Audio forums. There are guys building hi-fi audio amps who would kill to have those for a project!I know you said no more lamps, but have you considered a hanging light fixture? I could see those making a neat "sputnik" style fixture welded at the arch to make a bit of a star pattern. I could also see those being used for a fish skeleton wall sculpture.
Reply:I would make an offer on the heat sinks too! They would work well on cooling my hydraulic oil on the wood splitter!
Reply:thanks for the ideas everyone. when work slows down in november i'll try some outnot sure I want to sell the heat sinks |
