Luckily, I have not been victimized, but would possibly like to make a protective cage(s) for my A/C units at the office.  I have been asked by a few people if I have made any, or could make them one, also.If it is not next to a brick wall, where you can use anchors, like Tapcon, do you simply dig  holes and Quickcrete? Also, to access, our remove the cage for access to work on it, how do you accomplish that, but not make it too easy for a thief to do the same?I do realize a determined/desperate thief will go to greater lengths than you expect.  But, I do believe that if there is an easier target down the road....hopefully, they will look elsewhere. Thanks for any help or suggestions that you may have from prior experience, or mistakes (always a good teacher), or thwarted attempts that you foiled TxDoc's Photos Lincoln SP175 PlusLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln 250 LX Spool Gun Lincoln Precision Tig 225 Hypertherm 600 KMG 2x72 Belt GrinderBaldor 812RE Grinder

Reply:Twenty some years ago I made some cages for some units in south Dallas.  The response was so positive that I decided to look into it as a business.  I went to the yellow pages.  There were welders specializing in them already.  I couldn't compete in  price back then and I know I sure as heck couldn't now.  I suggest you google it and unless you just have to make one for yourself for the thrill of doing it I would check out what the local welders are doing it for.Good succor rod works because it is substantial and hard to cut.  The biggest concern has to be the access to the padlock.  If you make the padlock accessible then that is the weak link. The best deterrents are light, exposure, and cameras.life is good

Reply:with 40 rent houses the gentleman I worked for I just about say its impossible to stop the crooks with the cordless equipment on the market.  Many times I have tried different sizes of pipe inside one another,  have used oil field pipe but ends up a good pickup and a strong chain they clean the place out both cages and condenser as well as copper line they can reach as was mentioned above some neighborhoods are pretty tough.  Clifton
Reply:Years ago, I lived on the north side of Chicago. One night, I was working late and I heard a sound. The copper air-conditioning lines were moving where they went through the exterior wall. I grabbed a handy "persuader" and went outside expecting to find some tweaker kid yanking on them. Imagine my surprise to find it was a 70-year old man! I yelled What The F... and he scurried away mumbling apologetically.Later when the condenser crapped out I mounted the new one on a steel platform 12 feet up on the wall. No more issues.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:First, thanks for all the replies!  I just got home and it almost midnight. The last few days have been from early morning to late night and I have been just too tired to get back on the forum to reply.  Sorry it seemed like I asked for help and did not even respond.  That is definitely not the case. I am printing out the replies and taking them read. All of my units are 5-ton heat pumps that sit on the ground and have plastic base that is about 3 inches tall.  A couple are behind a shoulder high wall on a fairly busy street and with metal halide lighting or LED equivalent lighting that is very, very bright=hard to hide. One is behind the building, visible from the street and about 30 feet from an 8 foot wooden fence with houses on the other side, and lit with a 250 watt metal halide wall pack light and the neighbors have motion sensor lights that light up when I anything passes back there.  Police patrol there every hour or so. The units at home are two five ton units on the house and a five ton and two ton unit on shop and shop offices.  My drive is about 1/4 mile blacktop and gated so I am not too worried about them.  The three at the office are my main concern as you can get to them and maybe people might not see or be paying attention.   I would like to make it obvious that it would be a better use of a thief's time to look elsewhere.Again, thanks to everyone for responding. The help is much appreciated and will be a great help.TxDoc's Photos Lincoln SP175 PlusLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln 250 LX Spool Gun Lincoln Precision Tig 225 Hypertherm 600 KMG 2x72 Belt GrinderBaldor 812RE Grinder
