Home Depot has a sale on Dewalt 4.5" grinders. 2 for $99.00. I bought em. On the way to the register, I saw "made in China" on the box. I bought em anyhow. 9.0 amps. When I opened the box, I was thinking I wonder if these are like the ones from harbor freight a guy I know had. Once I saw the tool to remove the wheel and the nut that holds it on, It looked "awful familiar". I took it out of the box, it must have a 10 or 12 foot cord with a 2 prong polarized plug. Put the wheel on and fired it up. It spun up really fast, it sez 11,000 rpm on the box. I used it on a piece of 1/4". Cut pretty good and had a LOT more balls than the harbor freight one I used before. It was NOT the quality dewalt I had before. The gearbox was noisy, so I took it apart. There was grease in there, but none on the bevel gear, so I spread it around the gears and put it back together. It was still kind of noisy, but better. Looks to me like the cheap gearbox with a decent Dewalt motor. I will do the grease thing with the other one before I use it.Make your own decision from here.DavidReal world weldin. Reply:I don't like the new DeWalt grinders. I will still stand by my Milwaukee's and my Makita. One Milwaukee is about 10 years old. I had to shorten the cord because it freyed over time. The other is about a year old. The only difference between the two, is the new one is a little more "ergonomic" and it has the standard 5/8" piece versus the 1/2" on the 10 year old Milwaukee. Awesome grinders, and very quiet. The HF one has been reduced to wire wheel duty.Lincoln PowerMIG 215XTLincoln Precision TIG 225Hypertherm 300
Reply:sad to hear they are not as good as they once were. my dewalt grinder and chop saw are about twelve years old and still work great. they never bog down during a cut.
Reply:My buddy has an older heavy duty 4 1/2'' Dewalt grinder with the paddle switch. The thing looks like hell but takes off rust like a brand new one. The cord is in really bad shape though, with a bunch of fraying and cracks.
Reply:that is why they are 2 for 99 bucks. you use on for parts

Reply:I bought a Dewalt 4.5" grinder, it has the paddle switch, and the rubberized handle, i think it was an older model with the grey (metal) upper gearbox housing, the new ones are either painted or are plastic, which one did you get?
Reply:I have a U.S. made 4-1/2" DeWalt that is about 15 years old. It's been used quite a bit though not as much as a commercial shop. I recently cleaned it thoroughly, replaced the cord with a new three pronger and greased inside the gear box. It is still running well. Reply:Yup, H-D has had that 'special' going for a while now. When I first saw it I was tempted, until I realized:- wife will hit me with the grinder if I bring yet another tool home (unless I can hide it well in the overfilled, overcrowded, garage/workshop);- although the tool is DeWalt yellow, it just doesn't seem as solidly built as even a few years old grinder;- regarding the build quality, the thin metal and more plastic pieces on the gearbox did not inspire feelings of 'sturdy' at all;- the same scenario also played out with a recent Bosch 4 1/2 angle grinder on markdown at H-D, even with a 'free' diamond wheel thrown in, the construction of the tool is getting lighter and thinner and it also had almost the same plastic cover-plate on the gearbox as on the DeWalt and most of the other grinders on the display wall, so I passed on that as well.I did sneak another H-F sale grinder in though. That was ~$15 or so, compared to the ~$50 Bosch and the 2/$99 DeWalt.rant-mode ON: Stupid bean-counters and greedy CEOs are trading on a brand name and cutting quality all over the place. Rant, rant, rant!!! Except for plastic color, the units are looking suspiciously like they are all coming out of the SAME factory (in China). I mean, how are different brand grinders going to end up with the SAME gearbox, with the same mold lines and ribs and that new air-flow notch by the spindle-lock button and all?

Reply:OK, I used it more today. It has a LOT of balls. The box claims 11,000 Rpm and I believe it. The gear box is all metal. The switch is a slider exactly like the $15.00 gutless wonder harbor freight type I used before. My old Dewalt was the paddle switch type with a saftey that I was always going to remove, but never did. It lasted about 10 years. I wore the brushes out and the comm went out to lunch. I can honestly say the new one has more balls than the 2 makita 7.0 amp ones I have now. I have a few old spindle nuts that don't take that goofy wrench I can use on it. Its still 5/8 thread. Another thing I noticed is the drive for the wheel on my old (good) one and the mikita's had flats on them so the back side washer can't slip. These new ones don't.I think I got my moneys worth, but only time will tell. I guess I would recommend them. They are NOT like the last one, but cost 1/2 as much. Same old thing, I got what I paid for. Its NOT a gutless wonder like the HF ones. Now its just how long will the gearbox last. I may put a flush grease fitting on it and fill it up with moly grease.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I really like my Bosch 1810 w/ the paddle switch, 8 amps, ac/dc capable, 11k rpm and low vibration. Sometimes I wish I would've bought an American made grinder but the Bosch is just such a great tool. It just makes all those HF grinders at school look silly when they heat up smoke and burn out once a week. I can't even say how many of those we have gone through, one of them got so hot I couldn't hold on to it. The guys at the local power tool repair shop got a HF grinder at the flea market just see what it could take. Lets just say it lasted a little while running off 220v.
Reply:I don't even know what dewalt models I have but all three are different. I never looked to see what it said on the box, in fact got the first one because it was all that I could get. I have two with the paddle switch and one has the slider. None were that cheap though, the cheapest was $70.00. The newest one is the most expensive of the bunch and sounded like it was ready to fling right out of the box. In fact my partner remarked that it probably wouldn't last a week. I haven't done anything to it but use it, for a year and a half now, and it still sounds like it wants to blow up. My dad bought one just like it and it too sounds like it wants to come apart. Now I did talk to a dewalt rep a bit before it came out and he told me they were undergoing a complete redesign including changing the airflow direction and that could have something to do with it. I primarily use the one with the slider switch as it is much easier on my bad wrist and hand (chief reason I don't use Milwaukee anymore). It is also the lightest and smallest of the bunch. I'm happy with any tool I buy if it outlasts the warranty. I buy Lincoln and Miller because I know they will outlast their depreciation.I hear ya on the wife thing David. Reply:One of the best grinders I have owned was a Black and Decker 4.5" "Automotive Series" It was identical to the first dewalt paddle switch grinders, and was made prior to dewalt buying out B&D. It's taken close to 20 years of daily beatings without nothing more than a few sets of brushes, cords, and one gear head I robbed from a junked out dewalt. I tried dewalts, and I never got one to last. I have now gone strictly to bosch grinders. I have one Metabo, and it seems to do very well, but my only source for them around here is too pricey. I will throw this in. I have a friend who buys the 4.5" Craftsman grinders buy sears. They are like $50 bucks, and he buys the extended warranty for 2 or 3 bucks extra, and says he never buys another one. They last about a year and a half, and then they give him a new one. He's been going on 7 years now with the first $50 purchase after a few exchanges. Maybe he has point. I'll just stick with the BoschI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:When I bought my Dewalt 4.5" grinder only a month ago it was $90 and I only got one of them, the gearbox screws are where I think they should be right on top, I opened the top up and found that either they squirt some grease into the top and screw it together or the grease is way too thick for 11,000rpm's and is getting spun right off the gears and never going back, because the gears where shiny and the grease was black. It's not very similar to the ones you guys are buying but it seems to work well.120v AC/DC 10 Amps Made in China with a paddle switch and a lock on if you are dumb enough to take that risk since it's hard to reach the button.
Reply:Denrep, now that I have used mine for a while, I am totally satisfied. Its got balls, and I like the switch. The other one is still in the box because I have (2) 7 amp mikitas. One with a wire wheel and one with a flap disk. For now, the new dewalt is my main grinder. I use it every day. ONLY TIME WILL TELL. I think the other Dewalt will end up in my truck. The gearbox sounds like its going to fly apart even after I greased it, but it works great. When I first got the dewalt grinders on sale, I saw the similar switch and gearbox like the El cheapo's at HF. I was disappointed, but now I am happy with them.If I am doing a job that NEEDS the guard taken off, It gets put back on before the same job is done, on the clock. Reply:The DeWalt 4.5" grinders are Black and Decker, in a yellow shell. Look closely. Even the mold used for the shell is identical. It's just a different color plastic, with different stickers on it. ALL the parts are exactly the same..bearings, gears, switches, brushes...I have about 6 Dewalt grinders. Five are broken and kept just for parts. The 6th makes a lot of noise, often chatters badly, and hasn't been used but about 6 hours total, since new. DeWalt used to be good. It's now junk.
Reply:David and Denrep,How are the grinders holding up?H-D and/or Dewalt knocked 17% off the price for a sale/promotion price. I don't remember if the sale ends March 31 (today) or if it extends into April or not. But the 2-for-$99 grinders are now (or were) 2-for-$82. That's $41 each for 9 amps and 11,000 rpm.Lowe's is knocking 15% off power tools (pneumatic tools as well). Methinks the economic downturn has the retailers concerned. They really aren't getting the sales numbers or dollars.Anyway, they're in the garage. Spun them up, seem OK. Haven't had a chance to use them yet.
Reply:I used the daylights out of mine. Its a nice grinder. I took the gearbox apart and packed it with grease. Once it stopped coming out every where, it works great. Five tape measures for $12.95The stuff is so cheap that packaging and shipping is costing more than the product. So to get the "ticket price" higher, they need to increase the quantity. Reply:OK, I tore it apart today. Brushes were good, one of the segments on the comm had raised up. Defiantly from stalling it. I got the wheel caught under a gusset and stuck on an anchor bolt. NO fault of the grinder. If it had a paddle switch, I could have shut it off sooner. So if it was a $159 Milwaukee, it would have probably done the same thing.......If I see 2 more I will buy them. The only bad thing is it spins too fast for a cupped wire wheel. The wires flatten right out. Still got one left. David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:There are a few different DeWalt 4.5" grinders. I have the old DW402 with the paddle switch from years ago that is still working, though the bearing is starting to go finally. I also have another DeWalt 4.5" with a plastic gear case that cost about half what I paid for the 402. It has a thumb switch. It is not built to the same quality, but it gets the job done and was half the price so can't fault it much. I think it's a case of get what you pay for. I think the new part number for the 402 is now 28402. That is the closest I could find to my oldie on their product info page.I am going to buy the new combo 5" and 6" grinder DeWalt has with the long handle grip and trigger switch. I forget the part number. Lowe's has it for $169 but I found it on Tool-Up.com for $115 or something like that. Same part number. Appears to be built good. Gotta do a little saving since I'm running on a shoe string these days but I'll make a report about it when I finally do get it. I need to replace the 402 at some point as it's starting to chew stuff up if I'm not careful. I think this new heavier one will be just the ticket.I have a couple Ryobi's and a couple Task Force cheapos I use on the truck.
