I'm looking to hopefully purchase a vertical bandsaw for home use sometime in the future, but one also reasonably priced and with a small footprint and power demand. My only first hand experience with vertical bandsaws was at my last job where there was a 14" Wilton (comparable to the 14" Jet's now) 115v metal cutting bandsaw. They used to sell for under $1k from what I remember, but now are $1200 on up. I don't have the funds for that right now, and if I did, I'd instead be looking for at least a 17" throat. The 12", and maybe even 10" Dayton wood/metal bandsaw has caught my eye though, as a possible candidate for my needs.http://www.google.com/products/catal...CJQBEPMCMAk4ZAHas anyone used this and can provide feedback on it?
Reply:I happened to come across a 15" dayton a few months ago, for 300 bucks so I grabbed it. After a few new parts , around another 125.00 & some serious fine tuning it cuts very good, just a little slow. Very easy to move around, & doesn't take up to much room
Reply:Bump for any other useful feedback
Reply:No personal experience with these saws. My Dad has bought a number of Dayton machines over the years and generally been fairly happy. They are all imported these days so it may be different. I'm partial to Do-All saws... but even used they are way beyond your budget and size limitations. This looks fairly comparable to a decent wood band saw but the variable speed allows you to dial it down for metal. Being able to put 3/4" blades on it is a huge plus... wide blades cut straighter and last longer. I looked for some reviews online... but didn't find any. Maybe someone can recommend something in the price point that is comparable to help you decide. If you decide to get one let us know how you like it http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg...N=0&sst=subsetHere are the specs:ItemWood/Metal Cutting Band SawType12" FloorMotor Voltage120HP3/4Amps AC7.0Hz60PhaseSingleNumber of Speeds4Speeds (FPM)90 to 3000Cutting Capacity Round (In.)7Cutting Capacity Rectangle (In.)7 x 2Cutting Capacity Square (In.)7Max. Reply:I'm tempted to jump in and buy it.....but am not too sure about it's harder metal cutting capabilities. One of the sites that listed this model for sale described it at "wood & non-ferrous metal bandsaw". I'm wondering if 90fps is still a tad fast and I need something in the 30-50 fps range if I want to do anything with stainless on it. (Unless a good blade and cutting fluid will make it sufficient)

Reply:iodine will make your blades last when cutting stainless. works on drill bits and hole saws too. I have no idea why this works. told the machinist at work about it, he'd never heard of it in 30 yrs.  anyone here know?VinceHobart CyberTig 300 stick/tig w/water cooler (my CL score)Victor 315/1060 on LP            mostly farm repairs/projects
