For years I've got those little plastic snap cases with 4 to 6 of those crappy elastic head bands.  With rectangular flip-up goggles fully decked out with glass plate over filter and Cheaters and their glass plate, the elastic is barely stiff enough to deal with the weight even when new.  After just a few months, they are all stretched out and shot. So that has been the way it has been since 1970 when I started oxy-acetylene welding up auto bodies. So I ran across an old set of safety goggles and noticed that they had a solid black rubber head band. They were decades old and the band was still strong and compliant.I swapped it into my "go to" welding goggles and finally, a head strap that was robust enough to do the job.  And there is every indication that it will last years and not months. So why are they virtually unheard of at all the welding supply shops I deal with?  It seems the solid rubber are more related to safety goggles and respirators rather than welding goggles. The ONLY place I have found these is a lone guy selling them on eBay.  And even though they are AO Safety, I can't find any other internet source for them. You should be able to buy one of those plastic snap cases with these rubber head straps... but then, you might never need to buy a new one because it seems they never wear out.  (Hell, I was thinking of cutting up bicycle inner tubes to make my own.  But then I'm a Cheap Skate!)I'm interested to hear if anyone else has discovered these straps and uses them.
Reply:not only have i given up on the bogus elastic straps on cutting/welding goggles i sh!tcanned the goggles themselves in favor of a tinted full face shield. it was too much trouble fitting them over my glasses and it was a pain to swap out the glass/filter/cheater plus the faceshield never fogs up.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Go with the face shield and never look back!!   Bob
Reply:I've got a face shield set up for oxyacetylene, however the flip up filter goggles have one function I really like:  its not that you flip up to see w/o filter darkening - its about seeing to chip/scrape/grind rust and still have eye protection.I remember being shown back around 1970 when I was just starting out, being lucky enough to find a mentor, the uncle of a friend, before auto darkening filters, how you set the face shield pivot clutches as loose as possible so you flip the shield down into position with a "nod" your head without having to use your hands which were already in position to start welding.I hated that!  and yes, I have a crappy Harbor Freight auto-darkening helmet.  But in my defense, I am a hobbyist and don't put long hours into welding.
Reply:I use a clear face shield for grinding and chipping and wear glasses with side shields under that.I'll happily swap shields all day, and I've never had to go to the hospital to get slag removed from my eye. I also carry PPE in my personal truck because if I end up helping a friend I want full protection then too.Goggles don't protect my face from fragments. If they are included in an OA kit they go straight to the trash.
