Tig Welding Potmetal

Can potmetal be tig welded? I am told it is a poor grade of aluminum, is this correct?

Reply:I welded a corner joint on a tonneau cover for a friend and it was a disaster. I thought it was aluminum at first, then when I started the arc, it started popping and spitting like i've never seen before. I've never had that much trouble with aluminum before. I got through it, but it looked really bad. Do you think it could have been potmetal?
Reply:There really isnt anything made of pot metal anymore, which is essentially Zinc, or Zinc alloys. Most of what you guys are asking about is low grade aluminum castings, which are hit or miss regarding weldability. Only way to find out is clean 'em up and strike an arc.
Reply:"Pot metal" is a generic term but generally nowadays refers to zinc-aluminum die casting alloys. Many items are made from these alloys, some of which have the strength of mild steel.Welding zinc alloys with any arc process is essentially hopeless due to the low boiling point of zinc.
