I weld up 4ft long sections of 16ga stainless.  Flat position, and over an arced curve.  In the winter when it's dry, my gloves slide fine while I'm moving the puddle along. In the humid spring/summer, my gloves 'studder' along, making it very aggravating, considering the weld pool is about 1/8" in diameter and the weld itself is only about 1/16" thick and runs the entire 4" length of the work piece.  Very delicate work, so having a glove that studders along while you're welding can really make things frustrating with your weld.Does anyone know of a glove that slides along nicely on stainless sheet? It's basically the bottom of my right hand (not the palm - underside of pinky and down) that's in contact with the steel.I should also mention, something CHEAP would be good, as our gloves only last about a week.  We're handling, forming, bending, bashing the metal all day and those sharp edges really do a number on the gloves."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:Use kevlar coated gloves to handle the steel. Use your TIG gloves to TIG only. considering a bulk bag of 20 throwaway kevlars costs 10-20 bucks and one pair of nice Tillmans can equal that, its a no brainer.
Reply:I put a cheep cotton glove over my Tillman on my right hand. Sometimes just cut a finger off of the cotton glove and slip it over the little finger of my torch hand glove.  Many of the soft leather TIG gloves are sticky and don't slide well.  I wish they would recognize this inherent problem and work to fix it.Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:I've never tried this, but in theory it should work well.buy some umhw tape off of ebay or google it , there are many places that sell it. stick a strip of that to your gloves and in no time you will have a smooth weld and have the urge to watch figure skating.
Reply:Try a tig finger - they work excellent Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Don't drag your hand on your work piece is basically what it comes down too. Try resting off your pinky or whatever you have to do and be far away from heat build up. You'll always get scorched once in a while, but dry runs, comfortability and finesse for the most part are your best friends when tiggin.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I'm with MinnesotaDave.  I just got a tig finger from Jody and it is very slippery.  And helps with the heat. Keep it in your pocket and slip it on to weld.M&R JohnsonMiller 180SDLincoln weld pak 180Hobart 250ciMill Lathe
Reply:Are you welding the full 4' without stopping? If you are only welding a few inches and skipping around then you don't need to slide your hand at all. Reply:The first image is a shot of the main lap-joint seem.  Probably about 2' of it shown (it's about 4' in total).2nd shot is 2 round pieces with the joint set up as lap joint (or edge joint). Edges of both are not melted away.3rd shot is the outer 'rings' that we use to space out the other body (the 'skin') and the middle body.  Last edited by z0diac; 06-22-2014 at 05:57 PM."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:+1 on the tig finger suggestions. One of my classmates has one and it really does slide well. I suppose if you need it to cover the outside edge of your hand, you could buy one, cut it apart, and somehow secure it (sewing perhaps?) to a dedicated glove used only for welding.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkAspiring Top-Notch WeldorLooking for work/experience in Eastern Massachussetts
Reply:I don't think UHMW is a good idea, the heat may soften it and it will become sticky. Either cotton or fiberglass cloth would be worth trying IMHO.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Is there a reason you have to rest your hand on the steel? Usually I only rest a finger when I've got to travel with a weld.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:bsx makes gloves with a "drag patch" on them.  I saw Lanse review them in one of his videos (chuckie2009).   They are about $16- $17 a pair
Reply:If you're doing strictly fusion then stick a Mig glove on the rest hand. No need to feel filler rod and the glove should slide smoothly over stainless if you keep it relatively clean.
Reply:Here's some gloves with heat shields built in like tig fingershttps://www.google.ca/search?q=heat+...es%3B300%3B300Last edited by Doug247; 06-23-2014 at 01:15 AM.Reason: missing linkNothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:Why not try an Ove-Glove on your torch hand.  There's some off brands with zero grip surface added, but even the branded ones don't have grip on the sides.   Should work.

Reply:Some of the Dutchmen I've worked off shore with refer to gloves as "hand panties".
Reply:I see no reason why a tig finger wouldn't work perfectly... you must hold your torch in some bizarre way or something.exactly what part of your hand is contacting the surface? (put the tig finger there...)Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:Kevlar, or nomex, or zetex gloves. They are expensive, but will last much longer than a leather glove.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
