A couple of weeks ago I bought a cheapie Canadian Tire 110V Mig welder. (it was on sale and I bought on impulse....what can I say!) After using it for about 20 minutes I repackaged it and brought it back, swapping it out for the Lincoln MigPak 180. All I can say is WOW....what an impressive little machine. I have a Lincoln 300D on my portable and run an LN25 off of it but it won't turn down low enough to weld lighter guage material. So I made up an adapter cord to run the MigPak 180 off the 230V output. Works great (although I've only run it a very short time!)I'm considering buying the aluminum spool gun so I have aluminum (albeit limited) capability. I have never done much aluminum welding and never with a spool gun. Can anyone advise as to whether it is worthwhile getting to do the occasional small aluminum job? (Never know what kind of job it will be....whatever the phone call brings!) I realize TIG aluminum would likely be more versatile......I don't have that (AC) capability on my portable. Any comments/suggestions appreciated!Rotavia
Reply:gday rotavia i to have the 180 and yes wow is what i said to, as with the spool gun it is very good in my local dealer they have a work bench set up were you can test there gear maybe try phoning around and see if can be done in your area
Reply:A spool gun was my first accessory for mine....with just a little practice I was welding some decent beads.Really not big enough for heavy stuff but it does do alright.
Reply:so you guys like this machine, it runs well? i am considering to buy one as well, dont really weld much more than 5/16 thick, so it should be alright then?
Reply:Thanks for the input guys! I'll spring for the spool gun. Jeeper....it seems like a great little machine for me. I've been using it quite a bit lately. I think up to 5/16 (or even heavier with multiple passes) you'll be happy. I don't use it with the flux core....only MIG with 75/25 gas. I've done some really light gauge and also some railings.....very versatile machine.
Reply:Nice, now i just got to save up the dough!!! |
