So I got a great deal on a bunch of cut off wheels...  But didn't realize they were Type 1 /flat wheels...I have always used the Type 27 / stepped or offset wheel... on my Dewalt DW402.The type 1 fits (7/8 arbor hole) but the wheel come dangerously close to the grab handle...   yeah, I know... no guard. so do I need to buy another grinder to use use the type 1 flat wheels?I can't seem to find any adapters online....  besides, the threader arbor is only so long...Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:Can you space it out? I seem to remember doing that in the past for some reason or another. Are you using the backing plates already?
Reply:Put a thicker backup washer on the grinder, or maybe two, depends on what you have handy.I hate it when I accidentally order the flat ones. I usually order by the hundred, so I get to live with mistake for a longer period of time.
Reply:My makita grinder came with two backing plates, one for the depressed center disc an another for the flat disc.Dewalt adapters are available.http://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/04317095 Attached ImagesLast edited by triptester; 11-08-2015 at 10:33 AM.
Reply:Is your question, how do I continue to use my grinder with type 1 and no guard?I use only type 1 cutoff wheels exclusively..  However, I have never noticed them not fitting on any of my stock dewalt grinders.  All my guards are installed.

Reply:Get a guard, your fingers will thank you....

Reply:I stopped buying those off-set threaded wheels years ago.....They are too expensive, plus I ain't not never missed their extended reach...Plus they usually extend beyond the grinder guard.I ain't no guy to nag you about grinder guards, but I have suffered a few gouges and seen worse when grinders were ran without guards.I recently replaced all my grinders at great cost(10 of them) due to mostly how the guards attached and how they were adjusted.Every grinder you buy will come with the spacers and nuts for flat wheels...plus a stupid wrench or spanner, plus the guard is designed for flat wheels, so no reason to buy the more expensive offset threaded wheels. The only threaded wheels I buy are the cup wire wheels because they cain't make them to fit non threaded.Check out the abrasive sites like Lehigh Valley for for inexpensive wheels in bulk for best prices on quality wheels.http://www.lehighvalleyabrasives.com...FQEJaQodUfYF8gI have tool drawers full of their stuff and a standing order saved on their site.If I could buy same better and cheaper, I certainly would.
Reply:Sometimes you are just stuck on a job with one grinder. That is where the threaded wheels really make up for their cost. You  can buy them cheaper than the non threaded ones if you but them in bulk so it is not a big deal.

Reply:Box is ten case is forty to me.I got mine on ebay Sait pipeliners 4.5" 1/8" at maybe $1.25 each. Maybe half of the lot I bought were that 3m cubitron stuff too. I agree with you on the threaded stuff being a bit too pricey retail and then you have more to throw away when you done. That was a deal I stumbled upon looking for something else. I am sure it can be done again though.
Reply:So use them I use them on my dewalt not sure if it's 402 on not but no big deal what the difference in space maybe a 1/4".....hmmmm safety worried about that and no guard,,, mine never comes off there's always a way around it!

Reply:If you have a spot where a standard grinder wont fit you should be using a die grinder

Reply:It has to be spooky grinding in a spot without a guard when you could not with one. I have done it but I think it is a bad idea.

Reply:Yep... like some dumby buying 5" discs for a 4.5" grinder. I also prefer to leave the guards on when I can. Those cheap 5" discs I got constantly shred while in use and will mess you up good if you don't wear proper protection.
