Skipping the life story~ I'm in need of advice. I just moved to Texas from Hawaii, just finished getting my GED. I want to get into welding. My options have come down to saving up for a vocational school for welding, or trying to get onto jerry job corps. I've heard that employers don't like to hire people from job corps, especially if you have a GED. I wanted to get opinions from people who are actually welders. Personally, id rather save up and go for the vocational school, but lets be real here, I'm 18 with no life experience. So what do you guys think? Looks like most of you have been welding for awhile so I figured id seek advice on here.
Reply:Welcome to the web. I don't know any thing about jerry job corps. Have you done any welding? If not I would be honest with an employer and tell them you are looking for work, that you'll be there, sober, on time, every day, week ends and over time as needed, not spend the day on your cell phone, that you can pass a piss test, and that you want to learn to weld. Then do something unheard of today, show up, sober, on time, every day, and stay off your cell phone. Believe it or not you can still learn a skilled trade this way, although most young people can't, show up, sober, on time, every day, and stay off the cell phone. You would be surprised at how desperate the skilled trades market is for people that can, be sober, show up, on time, every day, and stay off the cell phone. There is a secret message in the above passage. If you can figure it out and apply it to your life you can go any where and learn virtually any job with very little out of pocket expense. This is the way a lot of people have learned skills and got promoted as they showed up, sober, every day, and we didn't have cell phones so that left us with lots of time to learn and practice our skills, also known as work.Good luck with your career search and if you manage to find the secret message listed above feel free to share it with your friends.
Reply:I'm not sure how familiar you are with Texas but there is a new pipe manufacturer in San Marcos that has said they are hiring welders specifically from high school votech programs and from Gary Job Corp which is located in San Marcos. They hired 400 welders when they opened the doors and are expanding. Continuing education was stated as part of the deal. Gary Job Corp has a very good welding program and you come out with certifications.http://www.epicpiping.com/san-marcos-tx/
