Howdy folks,I'm hoping I can get some answers here but if anyone knows of a better resource, please let me know! I'm in the process of having my next home built which has a gas fireplace insert within a bumpout in a wall about 14' high and 7' wide. We have been playing with ideas for the surround such as tile or stone but we recently saw this at a hotel we were staying at and we both really like it:Its obviously some sort of patina product or several on a base metal but I have no clue beyond that. Anyone have any suggestions here? Many of the patinas need to be heated above 200*F for application which leads to a second question of could I use a rosebud and a torch to heat a plate consistantly or would building some sort of oven be a better solution (I've done this before with gun stocks and a propane burner). I think the idea would be to cut (or have cut) several pieces of 1/8" or 3/16" plate and fasten them to the stud wall.Any help would be great! Thanks.Last edited by kellanv; 11-10-2015 at 11:24 PM.Reason: Tried to fix first image rotation, not sure why its doing that
Reply:To me it looks like an acid etch and then wiped/brushed/polished and likely coated to prevent further oxidation.... I'm not sure what the process would be, but I'm guessing these guys can give you an idea. http://mozdesigns.comWe used them a few years back on a facility job. I'm pretty sure they can help identify the process and may even have some factory scraps they could ship your way.  Lots of different Architectural products out there that may fit the bill. Good luck!
Reply:that is just plain hot roll steel. granted, it has a heavy mill scale. depending on the steel mill, you can find sheets like this by the pallet. you just have to go to the steel yard and ask to see their stock. if the top sheet of the pallet is a pretty, smooth, even grey color with heat zones only on the outer edge of the long side, keep looking. You only need to look at the top sheet of the pallet of steel to know what is underneath. All the sheets in a pallet will be the same. I have seen and bought this heavily distressed hot roll at various yards, it just depends on the steel mill. You just have to drive around and find it. I would not use any thinner than 11-12 ga. possibly 14ga but if your wood substrate is of shltty, white-trash, residential construction standards, 14 ga will acutely wrap around and show the poor workmanship underneath. As far as preparation goes, it is best to carefully go over the steel with something like 800 grit autobody sand paper wrapped around a sanding block and a mixture of blue dawn dish soap and water. about 10% soap for a lube effect. This wet sanding will take off any truly loose scale that is standing above the surface of the steel. This loose mill scale will bubble when clear powder coating hits it. I would suggest building your fire surround fully installed, then taking it apart, cleaning it up as mentioned above then sending it out of clear powder coating. Just like you see in car or bike build offs, you gotta build it first, then tear it down for "paint" then final assembly. Tell the powder coater to only wipe and clear, not sandblast. I'd suggest a satin clear coat so it looks natural, not glossy. Hot roll is very forgiving to work with. you cant hardly screw it up unless your design, joints, fasteners, grain direction of the mill scale, substrate are all poorly done. I could go on and on with details. so actually, I change my mind, YES it is easy to screw up hot roll. good luck.
Reply:Just spray some vinegar on the steel and let sit for awhile and wash off with water. This was after a few applications. A single application left a neat looking patina looking deal but I needed more rust.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Great info, thanks! We don't really have any mills around here so I'd probably have to call/visit the various suppliers. I think I'll need to go decently thick for the plate within reason to keep things from bowing as you said. Dont want to create an enormous load on the slab though either. Its a custom home and I'm working with the builder pretty closely so I can likely spec 2x6s within the fireplace framing and stress the importance of flatness as much as possible. As far as the vinegar/rusting pataina, we use a mix of salt, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to rust our weathering steel/corten projects. We will be doing that on the exterior of the house but likely not the interior.
