buddy has a victor torch for sale.  i've been looking for one for some time and was curious if it was worth the money.   torch handle is model wh270fc-v.  cutting head is ca250-v.  the regulators are series 250.  the torch is in perfect condition.  i want to use this setup with propane.  my questions are;  can i use the acetalyne regulator for propane?  are the settings close to acetalyne?  can i get propane tips for this cutting head?    this setup will be used for home/farm use and 1" will be the extreme requirement for this torch.  i realize that i will need to buy new hoses for the propane.  no big deal.  thanks in advance.
Reply:You can use pretty much any acet. regs with propane, just not the other way around. That is because propane regs will put out a higher psi, and we all know that acet becomes unstable above 15psi.I can't help you with the tip issue because I know nothing about Victors. But if is a popular model, then I would imagine they're available. As far as the hoses, I don't use mine every day, and I have been using grade r hoses. I AM NOT TELLING YOU THIS IS OK. I am just telling you how dumb I am when it comes to using the proper hoses. When I need to replace mine, they will be replaced with grade T."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:from what i have read i could get away with the hose for right now with the propane.  the hoses are in very good shape so i would hat to have to buy new hose to replace new hose.  i'm like you in that if i had to replace the hose i would the t grade for the propane, jjust don't see a need right now. i've not really confirmed anything on the use of the propane tips with this cutting head.  i may have to contact victor with the model number to see what they say.  thanks
Reply:Whoever comes along who knows about this stuff... can we add a question about  propane and the victor outfits.... the ROSEBUDS ?   Can you use the regular one... or is there something different that must be used with propane?Specifically I am thinking about using it for glass working... ' lampworking'  .. making some figurines.... and trying to be cheap.... the special glasses are going to cost enough already....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:That torch takes a type 3 tip, A propane #1 is a CSGPN1. Here is the link: http://www.thermadyne.com/victor/pro...Code=VEC603200Stickman nailed the regulator, you can use it. You just need type "t" hoses and the tips. The rosebud will be a MFN heating nozzle.
Reply:i looked a little more last night and came to the same info that fred just posted in the link.  looks like i'll be good to go for propane with this setup.  gbm; from the research i've done, i've read nothing that said you would need a rosebud specific to propane.
Reply:Thanks, will let you know when I try it out.... I found out pretty fast a decade ago that acet is too hot for glass... I did not have access to internet at that time. AND the glasses were going to be way too much for just showing my niece how to make beads..... but the cost of the glasses seems to be much less now....Actually I am going with clip on protection due to my need for Rx glasses now... body wearing out is a bummer....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:what size oxygen cylinder would be best matched to a bbq grill tank?  should i get an oxygen tank that will run out about the same time as the bbq tank or try to match the oxygen tank to 2 bbq tanks?  or just get the biggest oxygen cylinder i can buy?
Reply:Check to see if the cost per cubic foot for filling a larger tank makes it cheaper in the long run... factor that in if it makes a difference.... usually the bigger the better if you do not have to manhandle it often... it also depends on what you are cutting and your style.... some people are much more efficient with the preheat and use little oxygen ... some not so much....LOLWeldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:Acetylene rosebuds often misbehave with LP, but that's easily cured with a clamp-on or permanently attached "flameholder". The one in the pics is a piece I sliced off a Tweco MIG nozzle, but any hunk of tubing which fits is fine.http://www.chaski.com/homemachinist/...p?f=12&t=86934Lots of 3-series LP tips on Ebay.
Reply:Thanks Farmall,   The fancy torches for glass working go from a  ' hot head' which looks to be a rosebud with that shield around it at $35 to hundreds and hundreds of dollars... some' internal mix', some ' surface mix'.....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:The glass torches are interesting in that some offer different flame types concentric in one head, but they are still absurdly expensive because they have a "captive market".You could make an adjustable torch mount to hold your rosebud and other tips in a fixed position. Brazing would be amply strong for that. You can run a valved splitter and run two different torches, one with a rosebud and one with a pointed flame tip. Used torches and tips are cheap on Ebay. The fancy concentric glassworking torches are neat, but a sound mounting system for separate torches would be dirt cheap and quite practical.
Reply:Thanks again.... I am sure mulling over my options... ( cheap ones ).... I am doing my best not to be a captive. Some of them clearly are fast to change from one size flame to another...and can change flame size without changing the nature of the ratio setting.... and can even do it with a foot operated electric switch.....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
