Why does grinding, and say cutting steel on a bandsaw, create all these magnetized particles? Royal PITA for sureXMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Impact and vibration can free up the magnetic domains in the metal, this allows them to line up in the local magnetic field.Magnetic domains fixed in a uniform direction makes a magnet.
Reply:Thanks, didn't realize the Earth's field was that strong. I first noticed this when filing my cert plates "pefectly flat" (instructor was a sadist) but just thought the files were "sticky". This morning, I was on my way out of the garage when my eyes spied heavy "whiskers" sticking out of the end of a pipe I recently cut. Trying to clean them off was just like trying to clean a magnet!XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Just to show you how strong the magnetic field is, take any piece of steel, small enough to hold in one hand and draw an arrow on it. Point the arrow magnetic North (same as a compass) and hit the other end with a hammer a few times. This lines the molecules in the metal up N to S and creates a weak magnet. Now, drop it on the ground and it is no longer magnetized. This works especially well with round stock or small pipe to demonstrate.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:LOL, how does the metal know whether it's being hit "a few times" (magnetizes) or being dropped on the ground once (demagnetizes)?XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.

Reply:A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top...... |
