I did a search, and couldn't find much here. Some things on the net about nitric acid, and hcl. not something you want to mix up at home I would guess. but maybe some of you have some ideas on this. I can't get to the welds on the inside of a small piece. thanks.
Reply:You trying to weld Vlassic Pickles?  Welding steel isnt good enough for you huh?  Gotta move on to the exotics?ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:www.weldingsupply.com sells a pickling paste good for 304/308 stainless steels.  It's not quite strong enough for 316.  It's under the cleaners and degreasers section.
Reply:Why are you trying to mess with aqua regia?  Have a pesky layer of gold inside that piece that you want to dissolve out?And you are right, messing around with aqua regia at home would NOT be a safe or prudent thing to do.More seriously, what are you trying to do?  Your statement about pickling stainless and some welds on the inside don't really tell us what you trying to do.  Clean it before or after welding?  Passivate the stainless after welding?  What?
Reply:Picking usually reffers to passivation and heat tint removal.
Reply:yes after the weld, in the places you can't get to with the abrasives. I don't have a reasonable sand blaster.
Reply:actually I live quite close to a vlasic pickle plant. But I don't think they want me to put my stainless in the pot.
Reply:Claussen pickles are better.
Reply:http://www.arcalchem.com/ has a line of pickling pastes and solutions.
Reply:Hi - new guy here.  I did a search to try to find some answers (no, really, I did!) but didn't really find what I was looking for.  Thought this might be an appropriate thread to put my questions under, as they have to do with pickling.I just recently picked up oxy/acetylene welding for the first time in a couple of decades.  But I have some projects that I think brazing would work better for.  In reading about brazing I came to the last step of pickling.  I'm having trouble figuring out what sort of container to use for pickling my brazes.  Just wanted to see what sort of containers you home/garage brazers are using to pickle your stuff in.  Based on this, it looks like a 50% solution of HCl is what my pickle solution will be - just need to find a large enough container to soak stuff in:  http://www.lucasmilhaupt.com/en-US/b...olutionschart/Side question - how necessary is pickling?  Can I get away without pickling?  I'll be brazing mild steel (maybe stainless at some point), and then painting it.  Mostly doing sculptural work, rather than structural/mechanical.

Reply:I pickle my braze sculpture in battery acid (35% H2S04). I use glass containers, either jars or flat casserole pans. I store it in HDPE plastic jugs, I bet you could use those too. Just cut the top off a laundry detergent jug or something. The reason I acid soak is to help remove the flux. I do heat/quench cycles first which crack off much of the "glass", then I soak in acid. After the acid soak (usually overnight), the flux comes off much easier, it usually becomes very brittle.
