Got a job that requires welding some handles back on some SS baskets.  They are basically a basket that goes into a laboratory "dish washer". The handles are 11/64 " or .1716 round and have a marking on the rod  "  AK 12/E M.-Nr.59452 01/56  ". This needs to be welded. Cannot use any other process due to contamination.  This is used in a laboratory. Wanting to know what filler to use but can't find what these markings mean.Lincoln MK 250, Syncrowayve 351, Cutmaster 151, SA 250D, bobcat 225  and want more.4 Daughters, 6 cats, 1 dog, 1 wife and don't want anymore.
Reply:I'm no expert! But to my knowledge 316 ss is the most corrosion resistant and used in the food industry. Getting shielding gas on the back side will be very important, using a back up box/purge chamber. Possibly solar flux if you can clean all the residue off. Do you have any pics? You will get more help from others with more experience with a few pictures. Good luck!Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:This is a question spun off the OP's question.  How does one tell what type of stainless one has in front of him when there's no external markings on it?  Is this a case where "309" wire or rod (GMAW or SMAW) comes into play then?  309 is like a "catch all" electrode for unknown types of stainless, correct? Or is there a "better" electrode classification to use for unknown types of stainless?   It's what I've used most of the time form non critical ss welding and when there's no specific WPS available.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Originally Posted by 4sfedCould these be heat treat baskets?  AK 12 stainless steel is a 12% chromium ferritic stainless developed as an alternative to 409, having higher oxidation resistance.  http://www.aksteel.com/pdf/markets_p...data_sheet.pdfBTW, ferritic stainless is magnetic.
Reply:A google search of "laboratory dishwasher accessories stainless steel"  yields this link near the top of the first page.https://us.vwr.com/store/catalog/pro...uct_id=4775817Do your baskets look anything like those shown in the product listing?  If so, according to the description, the washer and accessories are fabricated from 304L and 316L stainless steel.Check number #2.  Are your baskets magnetic?  If not there is a high likelihood they are 300 series stainless.  If they are magnetic, then they are likely 400 series stainless.Consult this chart based on your findings with a magnet.http://www.hobartbrothers.com/upload...ding_Chart.pdfIf your all parts are magnetic, use 309L filler metal to join.  If non-magnetic I would use 316L just to be safe.  309L would probably work also, but doesn't show up in the table as recommended for joining 316L.  If some are magnetic and some arent then definitely 309L filler rod.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:309 is not generally recommended for welding 316 but it is preferred for welding dissimilar combinations of stainless steels (e.g. 304 to 316) and it is a good choice for occasions where the exact alloys are not known.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:thank you all for the information I did use 309 and it worked fine.  I really appreciate all the information.Lincoln MK 250, Syncrowayve 351, Cutmaster 151, SA 250D, bobcat 225  and want more.4 Daughters, 6 cats, 1 dog, 1 wife and don't want anymore.
