Does anyone out there have one of these and has effectively used it on 2" sch.40 stainless steel pipe? Attached Images
Reply:It can handle 2" sched 40 though that's close to the capacity of the radial vise. It's a beefy unit but the other part of the equation is which cutters and what do you have driving it. JMR used to make some good saws but stopped. I've been using either Morse or Starett depending on who I order from at the time. Shane at Baileigh can give you the scoop. It's become pretty popular with fab guys that need something beefy but aren't using end mill set ups.
Reply:Thanks for the input dstevens! From what the person I talked to at Bailiegh said... it could handle what I intend to use it for...but, with all due respect to him.... he's a salesman for that company ya know?
Reply:Honestly, that is the one I have been looking at buying just because it looks so easy to notch on bends. Even though he is a rep for the company, I doubt he would recommend it to you if what you wanted to was over it's capacity...it looks bad for them if you buy it and then aren't happy with its performance....I would plan on driving it with a good corded drill or a drill press if you could get it fixtured up correctly.
Reply:I sometimes jump to conclusions...I take back what I said. I plan to operate this with a 1/2" air drill. I've never been to fond of corded drills..unless drilling concrete...or where there is no access to air.
Reply:Make sure you watch your cutting speed AND feed rate. Stainless, certain grades more than others, can be quite unforgiving. Work hardening can occur when the feed rate is too slow and overheating, read:COOKED, when your cutting speed (SFM) is too high.
Reply:I think that these look like a nice unit. I have been keeping an eye on them but I don't do very much notching. If you get it maybe you can post an opinion after you've used it some.Ken
Reply:KGIOR, there are some other lower cost options. For example I have the JD2 Notchmaster.19662, Shane wouldn't steer you wrong, he's a good man. As for an air drill, yeah, I did that at first. A gear reduction HF but be warned if you are going to be notching a lot of copes unless you have a big compressor it's going to run a lot. I have a 60 gal 3.5 hp CH and after the first couple of passes it keeps going. I switched to a 1/2" electric drill from Northern Tool. I've been looking to upgrade that to either a 1/2" Milwaukee or a Hole Hawg. With sched 40 2 1/2" a Hawg might make the most sense.Last edited by dstevens; 10-11-2011 at 05:05 PM.
Reply:Let me know if you have any questions.
Reply:Hey.. was I just set up? The job didn't go through..obviously. dstevens, you have a good point regarding the compressor running... and my compressor kinda stinks. |
