I am in the process of building a oil catch can and coolant overflow tank for my friends car for free. He gets parts for free and I get practice. I want these fittingshttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Weld-Alloy-H...ht_2334wt_1182However I don't like the price and it's a lot of money to practice on a few fittings. Anyway where can I buy thin hollow tubes like this, bend it and put the bead on the end of the pipe?I looked at flaring tools, but it's not what I want.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:I was looking to see if I can find something locally to save on shipping and such. Ideally I want to make the fittings that look like this so I can put my own bends in them.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Earl's makes a few different sized tubing beaders. I have the 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8" a bit pricey but does the job. I get 6061-T6 tubing so I anneal the end first and it does a nice bead. I've used it on thin steel tubing too. Use a bit of lube to speed of the processEarl's EZ Beader

Reply:I want to be able to make my own, bending isn't the issue, how do I out the bead on such small tubing?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Did you bother reading the replies?  There is a few different options suggested. My name's not Jim....
Reply:I think David R did a thread where he welded the bead on some tubes like that. Maybe it was someone else... Whoever it was used a rotary table IIRCIf you have a lathe, just machine the things...Find some "donor" item and cannibalize it...Buy standard steel barb fittings and make them work....You almost never "save" money trying to do things like this the "cheap" way. The only way it works is if you already have the parts or tooling available. If you want to find something "stock" then you need to go browse the old time hardware stores, auto parts places, surplus stores, machine tool suppliers and things like that for "adaptable" parts. Unfortunately with the advent of internet sales, many of those old time small guys have gone out of business. They simply can't compete with someone with lower overhead who usually doesn't stock the parts, but just orders them in as needed..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I see. That earls fitting looks interesting, just not sure how it works.I found this which looks very interestinghttp://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=51655However how do you even make this if you don't have a lathe?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Pay someone to turn it for you. You will have to supply a full set of drawings most likely so they know what you want. If you want then to design it themselves it will cost significantly more. You could build your own lathe... There are books out on the subject.Sit there with a dremel tool and hand grind the whole thing like you are carving wood. I've seen all sorts of things done with basic tools and lots of time. You probably need to be VERY detailed oriented and have a ton of patience.Again the time/ cost is probably more than you want to be bothered with to avoid spending $4 or $5.Last edited by DSW; 12-29-2011 at 05:01 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Well I would need more than one, probably a good amount so it's $5each. Just trying to keep costs down as I know I'll need a lot. Think I can bend .063 tubing at home of aluminum? I have a few art type things I want to try out that are in my head.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Sure. all you need to do is make the right dies. There have been any number of threads on here about building your own tube benders. The softer and thinner the tube, the better you have to build your die. Trial and error is probably not the easiest way however. If you really think you need a bunch of these fittings, I don't see the problem simply buying one of the factory tube beaders like was mentioned above or was mentioned in that article you posted. at $5 each, 25 fittings would pay for a $150  Graham beader. after that, it's all profit. Did you even bother to look at the link above for the Earl beader? Summit sells them for $35-$75 depending on the tube size. Granted you need one for each size, but how many different sizes do you need?http://www.summitracing.com/search/P...ubing-Beaders/If you want to do this stuff for profit, you need to learn to think like a businessman not a cheap schmuck. A good businessman realizes good quality tools pay for themselves quickly and make you money, Cheap tools, half azzed make do's usually are the sign of someone who doesn't take pride in their work. Granted many here can jury rig one off items for limited use, or put together some very nice items from scrap parts, but you need the mechanical understanding and know how to successfully pull this kind of thing off. If not you just look like a cheap hack. A good business man also knows when it's cheaper to simply buy the parts rather than make them himself. Yeah you can invest the money to have a tube roller that will bend every size imaginable, but if you never need to bead 3" tube, is it a good deal? What if you only need to do one or two 1 1/2" tubes? wouldn't it make more sense to buy an inexpensive unit that does say 5/8" tube you use all the time and simply buy the 1 1/2" fittings as needed? If your budget doesn't allow you to buy the right tool, sometimes it's just cheaper and better in the short run to buy individual parts. I don't often need an excavator or jackhammer compressor. When I do, I rent one. By this point I could probably have bought a nice used diesel tow behind screw machine, but I'd have needed to lay out a couple grand up front for one. that's just not really an option for the few times a year I might need one. I can better use that cash for other materials and tools, and simply spend the extra cash on the rental and bill it to the job. If I loose a job simply because I don't own the machine, and the rental pushes it over the edge, then it's probably best I didn't get the job. On the other hand if I know that I will end up using the machine long term consistently, then maybe it would pay to buy rather than rent, especially if the right deal comes along. It's why I'm getting the Bobcat from Josh here. The price out weights the rental if I need it 2 or 3 times.A lot of your issues comes from trying to do everything for nothing. I hate to tell you this, but it doesn't work that way. There is a reason why you don't find a lot of guys doing alum for example. Tooling costs is a big part of this. Ac tig, spoolgun, specialized benders and dies... all this costs money. If it was cheap and easy, everyone would do it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
