Hi, I'm looking at a 1958 model Lincoln SAE300. I cant find any info on how well this machine will weld on lower amp settings. If I buy it this will be my only welder for a wile and I would like to be able to use 3/32 rod for the small stuff if need be. Any ideas?
Reply:Welcome to WeldingWeb, ZachRidesRed I think the machine will tune down surprisingly well.Lincoln's SAE has one of the most refined controls ever built on a welder.Especially machines with the dual continuous control, rather than the stepped coarse switch, but either one is great at low currents. What power plant, Continental six?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 04-28-2009 at 12:48 AM.
Reply:Yes it has the Continental six, it has been sitting for the last four years and needs some work but I can hand crank it and it still feels like it has good compression.I should be picking it up this after noon
Reply:I think you'll be pleased with it. We're anxious to hear more about the 300 and maybe even have a look. There are a lot of Lincoln engine-drive fans (enthusiasts) not radiator fans. Good Luck
Reply:I have a 1978 SAE 300. Welds great with 3/32 !! Mine has the f 227 inline 6 Continental. If you want a smoother power source, you'll have to get the 3 phase electric version of the SAE 300. The L Head 6 cylinder is a very smooth runner coupled with one of the best welding generators ever made.
Reply:Thanks for the help guys, I brought it home about an hour ago. I will try to post some pictures before the week end
Reply:I worked on getting the old girl running this weekend... I pored a little oil in each cylinder a couple of days before starting in on it. I cleaned out the carb and points. checked the coolant and oil, then blew all the dust off.The next step I put in some fresh gas with led additive (do you have any idea how hard that stuff is to find anymore?) hooked it up to a battery and it fired right up ran like a champ. Now I need to hook the governor back up (the connecting rod fell off on start up) and I need to get the auto idler to work.
