I got a hold of one of these for free.In theory, if I were to fold it over four our five times, could I use it as a backing plate to fill holes with my MIG?  I don't want to waste a perfectly good piece of copper if not.  I'm not sure what the "alloy 110" is.
Reply:110 is electrolytic tough pitch. It isn't great for welding but thermal conductivity for a backing plate should be fine and electrical conductivity is fine for use on a welding table top.I do not know if you would get good thermal coupling between layers by folding it. It would have to be pressed together. You could autogenously tig the sides of the stack I suppose but it all might fall apart if you do not move really quickly. Reply:I picked up some scrap copper last time I was at the scrap yard.  One was about 1/8" thick and other one was about 3/8".  Thick one is about 3" wide and about 16" long.  I can check tomorrow.   I grabbed them for backing plates.I see you are near me, if you want a chunk of the thick stuff let me know.

Reply:I know mine was in the background for some of my pics, it is always on the welding bench. I'll try to remember to get a pic of it tomorrow.
