I think that FCAW was originally developed for outdoors applications where wind could blow shielding gas away.  Welding stainless with FCAW wire still requires shielding gas though, but I'm wondering if you still need that shielding gas if you are welding stainless with FCAW indoors in still air conditions?
Reply:FCAW-G always requires a shielding gas if you want to do it right.
Reply:RSD,Just saying FCAW is kind of confusing because there's two basic types of it.   There's "-S"  meaning self shielded and "-G" which requires additional gas for proper shielding (commonly referred to as "dual-shield").Hope that helps.Last edited by HT2-4956; 07-13-2014 at 11:04 AM.
