I have a Lincoln WeldPak 175HD I have on craigslist wanting to trade for a Hobart/Miller 140 and a little cash. I have a MM200 for the larger machine and would like to get a 100unit for body sheet metal (19ish gauge) and exhaust. The Lincoln works great on sheet metal, in setting C-4.5 (the setting for 18ga) it lays nice flat tacks. On B-3, the setting for 20ga, the tacks are too cold and pile up.I keep getting offers on smaller machines (100,125,etc). Assuming the smaller machine can take gas, at what level will the welder not be hot enough to lay nice flat tacks? I've never used anything lower than my 175. Thanks for any info!Millermatic 200Lincoln SP-100
Reply:I would keep the 175 and get smaller wire if you only want it for exhaust and sheet metal. You already have the machine no use in going to a smller unit. You're going to want .023 just make sure you can either get drive wheels or whats on the 174 already will go to that size.
Reply:The Miller 140 [   http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...p?model=M00234 ] has Infinite voltage control adjustments while the Hobart has 5-position voltage control. http://www.hobartwelders.com/product...ed/handler140/.  Infinite could be handier on light gauge instead of a fixed settings. Might just be personal preference.
Reply:I have the 175 loaded up with .025 and it welds great on sheet. But what I need it for its right in the middle of its power range and a 110 unit would be handy for access around the place and for bringing on off road trips.Millermatic 200Lincoln SP-100
Reply:Definitely .023 wire wit 75/25 gas.  Shovelon was recommending a softer wire named "easy grind" for automotive that I have yet to try.
Reply:Question is, will a 100 or 125 amp machine be powerful enough to lay down hot, flat tacks on the thicker 18 ga material? Or should I hold out or buy a 140?Millermatic 200Lincoln SP-100
Reply:No reason why not..I have a 90amp HF fluxcore machine I can do 1/8" with....Remember that the person with the gun in their hand has a lot to do with the finished product.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Got a older SP100. It's a great little machine for sheet metal. Runs hotter than I expected. INfinite voltage and wire speed. Fair deal at $200.Millermatic 200Lincoln SP-100
