Reply:It  has two hoses,One is air the other acetelene.Lead is melted in a compartment on top. When it is liquid you pull the triger and the air sprays the lead like a paint gun.The last time I saw one of these in use was when I was a teenage kid working in a local body shop in the early 1950's.I have never seen one since.Best regards,Grandpa Marc
Reply:Ah, ok that makes sense, I knew they used  to use lead before bondo came along, so that is how they attached it to the sheet metal..  coolTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:southpaw,No.  That's NOT how most body shops used lead back in the 50's-60's.  Lead came in "sticks" about 3/8" in dia and 12" long.  You heat the surface and spread the lead, much like you'd "butter" a frying pan.  You had paddles and files designed specifically for working the lead.Based on what we now know about "lead poisoning", I don't think I'd want that thing anywhere near my shop.  Maybe in a museum somewhere. This was about the same time that we were using "white gas" to wet sand vehicles for painting.Last edited by SundownIII; 05-19-2011 at 12:10 PM.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:There were other hazards also, like getting hot lead on your hand. You would have to have some heavy duty gloves on.Also you definately would not want to breath any of the fumes. This is offered as a curiosity of times long gone by.A great conversation piece! I don't think anyone would realy use it,although one could if brave enough! Best regards,Grandpa Marc
Reply:Marc,Didn't mean to sound negative. That "lead gun" definitely has value, just probably not for applying lead. Those were different time.  Wooden ships, iron men.We also used to produce our own acetylene (generator), but I think I'll stick with the bottles now.My dad and uncle started an auto body shop right after WWII.  My dad had been in vehicle recovery/maintenance in the Army and my uncle had been a hardhat diver/welder in the Navy.  My dad melted enough lead (body filler) to ballast a medium size ship.  He's 87 now and still going strong.  Guess the old saying, "If it doesn't kill you, it will make you tougher." applies.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Ah yes! we oldie goldies ARE survivors! Like vintage wine,we only get better with age! I still have a lot of lead bars and the tools to paddle it on.I aquired this from the estate of a friend of mine who did car restoration.I still think lead is the best for vintage car restoration since that is what was used in the days that they made REAL cars!! Best regards,Grandpa Marc
