Good evening;I am having brain fade. I want to build a target holder and 45 degree steel backstop to use for pistol shooting practice. My idea is to use a welded folding table that will be moved by a 3 point tractor system. Any ideas? This may not be the proper forum, but it is a welding project.
Reply:Minimum of 3/8 ar 400 for the backstop/deflector ar 500 would be even better . I know you said pistol , however ... Having my own range i can from experience say its only a matter of time until it takes rifle hits .
Reply:I agree, you need to use AR400 or better for shooting targets.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold

Reply:I dont think a tie/dirt berm would be 3 point portable ... Just sayin LOL
Reply:I made a target a few years ago before I started welding. It was two 12x12 1/2inch mild steel plates that hung from chains. The chains allowed me to angle it towards the ground and the plates being able to swing lessened the impact. 357 mags were no problem. A 7mm rem mag did out a nice hole in it though at 100 yards.
Reply:Please don't use a bare steel backstop! My local indoor range uses a thick covering over a steel back stop for pistol only. At my personal range I have a 6ft tall berm. I have built many targets for my self and friends, for pistol targets like plate racks poppers and dueling trees I use 3/8" AR 400. For rifle targets like gongs I use 1/2" AR 400 and hang it form old tire tread caps from semi tires. -Eric
Reply:After reading these responses, and finding a target holder that you stick in the ground for $15.00. I am going with that. Nearest house in direction of shooting is 880 yards or more with intervening hills. Will be using 9mm and 32 ACP pistols, and 22lr rifle (rifle only for scope adjustment)
Reply:I have thousands of rounds into my 1/2" mild steel targets with only 6 noticeable dents (44mag with huntin loads). And I shoot mainly 45acp FMJ 230gr full power loads. One does have a clean hole from steel core 223 though....
Reply:my uncle copied this system from savage, works real nice....http://savagerangesystems.com/bullettraps/ it is portable if you want or make or stationaryIf you see me running for no apparent reason, try to keep up:"Reality" What a concept!Miller Big 40 {1972} vintage, with 150 ft. of 000 leads, old Alaskan pipline welder.
Reply:I built 4X4 sand boxes and hung them on posts( with railroad ties and sand filled truck tires behind), but you could do what "tackit" said and make it moveable with a tractor. My boxes are only 10" deep, and weigh about 900 lbs. I have shot everything I own at them and nothing has penetrated more than 5 inches into the sand. The high velocity rifle bullets disintegrate and the low velocity pistol bullets stop in a few inches.Behind the center of the plywood faces , I attached old truck mudflaps to act as gaskets for the sand .I have replaced the plywood centers ( 16" square)several times, but am still using the original mudflaps without leakage. This system has also allowed me to recycle almost 20 lbs. of lead out of the boxes for recasting more bullets. Reply:Nice, junkie!!
Reply:Thanks. This system has worked better than I could have hoped for.I am amazed at the abuse the mudflaps have taken. The box on the right has had the face shot out and replaced 4 times, but the original flap is still holding back the sand. By the way, a lot of the marks on the faces of the boxes aren't bullet holes ,they are from the bullet fragments coming off the AR swing plates I made( I don't want you to think I am a lousy shot). That is also why I had to put up a shield wall on the right, the frags were chewing up the siding on the barn.
Reply:Frags do sure seem to mess stuff up. I have went all steel for my little backyard set up because I got sick of the wood stands getting one to many frags and collapsing.... One of these days I will have an actual backstop instead of gravity and distance. Disclosure, I only shoot pistols without a proper backstop. I go to the neighbors range for that.
Reply:I'm a little late to the party, but here's my little portable boolit trap:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...21#post2229921If you increased the size, you'd probably want to go thicker on the angled plate or put some ribs on the back side of it. |
