lincoln ranger 8 charging issues

Hello, I have Ranger 8 serial # U1961109358 code # 10373 with an Onan 16hp gas drive. Machine is somewhere around 10 years old and only has 150 hours on it. Drug it out of storage (spare machine) and put it back to work. Put in brand new battery, fresh gas and fired right up, welds great, but noticed amp charging meter (battery) was real high. Let it run for a few hours over a couple of days and always started each time.   Last couple days wouldn't start, had to jump it and now the battery is stone dead. Need to put battery charger on it to get it to fire up. Seems like something draws the battery down overnight and it's not charging. Reply:I believe that one came off the assembly line in January of 1996.  "But I could be wrong"Something is causing a short, and the only thing to do is start diagnosing the wiring and system.If you don't have an owners manual, and or an Onan service manual, you can go to Lincoln.com and download the owners manual from them and a service manual from Cummins Onan.The Lincoln owners manual will have a wiring diagram inside it, that will help with tracking down the wires that are associated with the engine.The Onan service manual will give you step by step instructions on how to diagnose their engines 12 volt system.You are also going to want to check all the wiring that is connected to the engines 12 volt system that are inside the machine, all the wiring that goes to the amp guage, start switch and so on for any signs of shorting, sometimes when a machine sets for a time, rodents will get in there and chew the crap out of everything!Good luck!Ken.#1. Reply:Check for 42-52 VAC at the voltage regulator. If the AC voltage is low or not present, theengine flywheel alternator may be faulty. If the voltage reading is correct, then checkthe output of the voltage regulator to determinethe charging voltage for the battery.Run the engine at high idle (3650 RPM).Meter set DC volts and placeone meter probe on the middle lead andone probe on the green ground wire connectedto the voltage regulator. Check for 13-15 VDC.Cheers
Reply:Good call, but the proper range to charge a battery is 14- 14. 5 volts. 13 volts is ok for trickle charging and 14.7 or more will boil the battery. The AMG type batteries don’t take well to high voltages.
