This is a weld on a large elevator machine. I was wondering if anyone can tell if this was stick or wire?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Yes that is a quarter. These are nice size welds. I am guessing this is a stick weld. These machines are from the early '80's.Last edited by Stick-man; 12-13-2015 at 08:32 PM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Ima go with wire as well.
Reply:I'm gonna stay stick. Those ripples look like 7024 ripples. Very fluid looking.
Reply:I vote flux core wire.
Reply:SSFC. Lincoln NS-3M .120 400 amps will look like sub arc but is a innershield wire, great deposition but no CVN this is what failed in the calif earthquake!

Reply:Sticky, that weld was done by such a specialized machine that there is no way I have one here.  So you can forget about using these guys to figure out which machine and then coming down here on one of your nighttime 'borrowing' sprees!  Just use the 110V MIG you already have.
Reply:hard to say but a mig cranked up into spray arc range or a mig with dual shield flux core wire cranked up will easily do big welds.it be a machine that can go over 200 amps more likely 300 amp machine.3/16" 7018 or 7024 rod makes big welds too of course
Reply:I'd bet wire.  It is possible to do it with 5/32 or 3/16 stick but short sections like that would really piss the welder off.  Restarting the larger rods can be a challenge with lots of waste.
