Been somewhat peaceful coupla daysHave the old relics out in the field, doing what I do I guess.  This old thing was made somewhere near the tail end of the Vietnam War, by the same people that brought you some of the marvelous weapons systems used back then (the Sperry-Rand Corporation).  Amazing how much more productive this machine is, compared to war machines.  It's still going, while the other stuff has been melted down as scrap.Kind of late in the season to be making hay, but it really doesn't matter this year.  Still recovering from the wildfire a few years back.  It destroyed my hay meadow, and what grew back was 80 acres of weed infested grass.  You can see the uncut portion on the right side of the picture.  It's pure garbage, not fit for cows.The idea has been to let the land lay fallow for 2yrs to allow ANYTHING to grow to prevent erosion.  Now it's "rebuild" time.  This hay will mostly be pushed off in the ditch.  You can see there's good grass below the weeds, and hopefully this first post-fire cutting will eliminate the annual weeds.  It remains to be seen what comes up in the Spring.  The perennial  weeds will show themselves, and I can deal with them using chemicals hopefully.This meadow produces almost $5000 worth of hay annually, but to get it back into shape will probably cost at least 2 1/2 times that (considering the fact I still have to buy hay from other people to replace what I've lost, and the value of the hay lost this year and last year, and the chemical treatments to come)It just kills me when people think that farming is the good lifeOnly fly in the ointment (of an otherwise very pleasant break) was the costly pukeage of the turbo on the old Allis.  Have a reman in route, supposed to arrive on Monday.  FOR THE WONDERFUL PRICE OF $450  Coulda been worse I guess, some of the turbos run near on a grand or more."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

I reckon I'll just keep farming 'til this runs out!".Farming is a great way of life, but it is a hard business. Glad you are recovering from the drought and fires. Hope you have a good year. Reply:Yeah, and they say burning the fields removes weeds, adds nutrients to the soil, etc.......I guess so if you didn't have a good hayfield to start with.  Good luck with it, Samm

Reply:I don't know what the turbos themselves cost, but the total cost to replace both turbos in my 08 Ford 6.4 this year was close to 10K.  Want to trade? .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:That yellow flowered stuff, if cut early won't grow back. The field behind my parents house had that in it for years, till the neighbor stated mowing it. You over seed that then mow that down with a sickle bar to cover the seeds (at least it worked on that field).
