Started out as just a big BBQ pit. Cooked on it twice, and decided to modify it with a vertical smoking chamber. Still have a long way to go.The actual pit doors are internal hinges, for a clean look, that work great! Stabbing the vertical now. The bottom of the vertical is sloped for a grease drain.Home hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!

Reply:Um......I'd guess 800 lbs or better. It's all made from 20" diameter, ¼" oilfield casing. I may wind up building a small single axle trailer for it so we can haul it to the lake and such.Home hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!
Reply:I'm gonna implement this for damper control on top, so I don't have to reach 8 feet in the air, lolHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!

Reply:It's amazing how much time all the little stuff takes.I really like the hidden hinges. I may have to steal the idea, sealing a door at the hinges can be a pain.Really nice, looking forward to seeing it being completed.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Gravel, to be honest, there wasn't a whole lot of thought in those hinges. I did one door hingeless, and the other door has external bullet looking hinges with grease zerks. I was testing to see which one I liked better. The internal hinge wins, so I'll be building one to match for the other door.Yes, you're right. This stuff on these pits are VERY time consuming, lol. I suppose that's why so many folks hate building themHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!
Reply:And here's another view of the hinge in case it helps ya. It's just ½" rod, inside ½" pipe. Then a piece of ¾" angle welded to the pipeHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!

Reply:Yes, that's fully open. I don't think I'll ever have any issues with them. Even burning it in, they did greatHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!

Reply:Lower the grate, or use bigger pipe, lol. There's a good 7" of clearance, so it would have to be a thick chunk of meat, lol. A brisket would still fit under these. Even if it did touch, it won't hurt anythingHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!

Reply:Ok I see you have the vertical chamber hanging from a chain how is going to keep from flipping over when you release the chain ,that looks like a lot of weigh hanging past the legs
Reply:I was worried about that myself, but it works great. I welded the vertical on yesterday, and slacked off my pickup chain, and it seems very stable. I even picked up the opposite end to test it.Home hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!
Reply:"LUCKY I GUESS" if I had done that it would have flipped over the second I put food in the smoker.gxbxc

Reply:The stack goes up through the roof of my work area, so that will hold it up for sure, lol. I'm probably gonna be mounting this to a trailer anyway......evintuallyHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!

Reply:Lol! I normally do take pics, but I've been so busy that I guess I forgot. Problem is, this cooker is under a canopy, and my pics turn out real dark. I'll snap some this weekend of the yard bird cookHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by! |
