Im having a complete hate for mig welding latly.....every job I wanna apply for is mig welding like come on, employer r so cheap they don't wanna go any other way....always the same boring old er70s-6 wire....flux core never stick never TIG the odd time like employers r so cheap, I wish the world would go back to stick welding
Reply:its annoying how employers think they can pay less for mig welding to that's bs in my books its all hard on ur health and should all be payed around the same never below $20 an hour
Reply:There's a place for every process richy and MIG shines for high production rate welding for a huge range of products.  It's not a matter of employers being "cheap" but rather remaining competitive and in business to be able to offer you a job.Just as with stick and TIG, learn to embrace MIG/flux core for the benefits they can provide and become the well rounded, versatile weldor you can be to broaden your skills and employment possibilities.  IMO.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:you're applying for the wrong jobs. If you want to work in a shop, learn to love MIG. You want to TIG/Stick, you need to get out in the field.
Reply:I have been welding stick and tig forn a year and mig and fluxcored for about 6 months...
Reply:Don't get me wrong I like all welding I just cant seem to find a good paying mig job
Reply:You're going to find that to be the case for the most part.  It's a skill supply and demand kind of thing.  I've known guys that MIG'd for less than $10/hour in a production shop because that's what the current market would bear where stick/TIG wasn't practical.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:yeah, no offense, but you can hire a guy off the street, and teach him to pull a trigger MOST OF THE TIME. i LOVE tig welding, and its a pretty skilled form of welding, and i have places calling me offering me 15-16/hr for 5 years of TIG ten years of mig and 3 years of stick experience...on steel stainless and aluminum. its frustrating, but its the way of the world.AHP alphatig 200xclarke 130en MIG (first welder i ever bought)NT Plasma 375craftsman 240/180 ac/dc ARCcustom 60x30x30 powder coating ovenhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Rossi...18853401526643

Reply:I worked heavy civil construction all my life. Majority of that was marine construction. In the early 1980s when the LN-22s came out, it was only a couple years until that is all you seen on the job site. Can't tell you how many jobs I've been on where there was no welding rod, or even a stinger to be found. Few months ago I ran into a guy who use to work for me, he said trigger pullers were making $42.50 an hour plus benefits. The fist picture is a Washington State Ferry system wing wall. The pipe piling laying on the barge were driving in the saddles on the wing wall. Do you really think the employer is going to have the guys use SMAW when they can just as easy run self shielded flux core to weld all the way around those saddles? Remember now there is another wing wall on the other side just like this one. Second and third pictures are a wave break, again all welded with wire. Reply:Some great advice here, the kind that is good for anyone to hear once and a while. Like duane said, embrace all aspects of welding. I sometimes I wish I could go back to square 1 and work in the job where I first started. The pay was low, it was repetitive, but they treated me well and I learned how to weld and build stuff efficiently and professionally. Ive got too many toys and debt to make less.If you want to get into an industry that still uses stick, Get into sawmill maintenance. They do projects on weekends and during the week you might be getting stuff ready to install later, or just be waiting for something to break down, and the money is good. Ive worked for some guys and companies where dragging a wire feeder around isn't practical, or purchasing one isn't either. Or they could be just behind the times.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Reply:In the field we use stick 90% of the time. Moments and large connections will get wire fed, or sometimes bent plate or other peices that need a ton of weld, but its easier + faster to run a lead + stinger and weld clips or whatever the case is.Speaking as an ironworker btw.Miller ab/p 330Hobart champ 16Miller 140Lincoln Power Mig 255Lincoln SA-250You can't make 20 foot welds on a tank or stuff like this

Reply:Here is a photo of the international competition.  I bet such is lucky to make $10 a day, likely a lot less... And Stick welding....
Reply:Docwelder, any car, any color, $39.95 back in early '60's.  Best regards,  Bob
Reply:Wasn't it the Sonny & Cher show who made fun of that? Or maybe Laugh in? Anyway someone made fun of it on TV. The paint job was $39.95, but the masking job was $400.00. They showed a car with the windows, bumpers, and tires all painted the same color. Reply:Carl, when I was in high school one of my buddies had his car painted by them, it was $39.95 if you did the tapeing and any color was if you chose their chose of paint.  Not a really great paint job but for $39.95 it wasn't bad.  Best regards,  Bob

Reply:http://democrats.edworkforce.house.g...-wage-news-dayFor a different perspective. A skilled tradesman even starting out should be able to make at least an equivalent of minimum wage as adjusted to 1968.   I am sure a skilled welder in the right job or business can make much more money than a adjusted minim wage these days. However with wide open global competition for jobs one may expect that real wages will go lower and lower into the future. As nasty history repeats this eventually means revolutions and wars breaking out everywhere.

Reply:Originally Posted by ReverserOne of those places ripped me off one time. They didn't even dull the finish before painting my old '36 Chevy hot rod. It already had a nice glossy black paint job, but I thought it looked too boring. So I decided to have them paint the body canary yellow and leave the fenders and running board alone. It looked really sharp when I got it back, although they did a poor job of masking around the windows. They had gotten yellow paint on the cracked rubber grommets, and that was a headache to get off. Then, after a few weeks it started getting a few spots on it where the yellow had faded to a cream color. That was bad enough, but then one day I took it to a car wash and a large flake of the yellow paint came off, revealing the black glossy paint under it. They hadn't bothered to wet sand the surface as they had advertised.
Reply:I always heard  "$99.95, leave the windows down ,and we'll do the interior for free!"

Reply:I have a friend that loves mig welders....He makes most of his money repairing broken welds from somebody that thought they knew what they were doing.  Mig can look real pretty on the top and be a cold weld underneath.  That"s where experience comes into play.  I learned to O/A weld first before learning how to use stick, then along came mig, I learned real quick that shielded is great for thin material, shielded flux core for heavy jobs, but you can't mig worth a **** with shielded outside in the wind.Measure with a micrometre, mark with chalk,  cut with a torch.Never force anything...just get a bigger hammer.RoyOld Airco buzz box approx 1974Lincoln mig pack 15Lincoln 175 square wave1954 9" south bend lathe
