These have been on the outside walls of a business in downtown Lake Forest for years. You can see them from the entrance to the Market House Restaurant on the Square. Funny how I never paid attention to them until.... I started learning how to weld. ----I'm adding these photos for the benefit of any members supplementing or earning their income by selling welded "goodies". The wall planter with the 3 little terra cotta pots of herbs sells for $130 at local craft fairs. And, they can't keep them in stock. They are selling like hotcakes for that price. Patio & herb gardeners seem to love them.--I can't imagine the cost of materials exceeding $20 and that would include the purchase of little pots at $2 each from K-Mart. A little DIY jig plate similar to that which was used to repair the name plate below could be used to create the scroll work. ----Just an idea.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Thanks for the pictures.  The boss just said she thought a couple of them would look good on the back yard fence.

Reply:Bob_C> I liked the contrast between the iron and the wood and how it was set off by the red geraniums. Please take a moment to add a photo of what you create soon as you strike this off your honey-do list. --weldermike> "looks like chinese mass produced junk" You have got to be right.... there's no other way they could replace those wall planters so fast soon as one is sold. They did look like something that could be reproduced by someone like me though. The name plaque is European for sure. It belongs to a former Navy Chaplain who retired and became the Pastor of a local Church. The ceramic tiles were from Italy and the little old man who originally welded the frame together 30 years ago was in Germany... somewhere around Nuremburg I think I was told. They're neighbors. They brought it over to me when they heard I was learning how to weld hoping I could repair it. I wasn't comfortable attempting a piece like that with sentimental value so the man teaching me repaired it... for free. I've got more time in since I was originally asked and would feel comfortable trying a repair such as that now. --Spot on weldermike!!! I LOVED that young woman's work. Especially her tree branch and tendril railings. Her grapeleaf and vine table set is to die for.... actually... so is her oak leaf and acorn table.  The ginkgo fireplace set is like nothing I've ever seen before. Her single oak twig candle holder is pure elegance and the calla lily memorial accents would be coveted by quite a few people I know. This woman is an artist.... she's "gifted". --Please DO share links to anything you find like Sims' work regardless of whether the artist is male or female.... Jew or Gentile... gay or straight.... fine art transcends all artificial barriers. --BD1> Yes!!! I do love anything that has it's "roots" in the natural world.--What a coincidence he shared a link to her work because I'm particularly fond of North American native woodies (trees, shrubs, vines) and NA wildlife. Reply:Not the greatest video on how to do this, but it may give you the basic idea. You'd probably like a lot of the stuff on Art Nouveau and the forged plant like forms they used.I just ordered a copy of this one for example... Reply:weldermike> "Glad you enjoyed it!!!!" I did! --DSW> The anvil belonged to my girlfriend's dad.... who lives in Louisiana down by the Gulf. We won't be going back for a few years. I suspect by the time I do go back.... he will have probably done as I suggested and passed it on to a son-in-law or to one of his grandchildren. None of his daughters were interested in it. At the time he offered it to me... I was attracted to it because of its history and simply loved the way it looked. Hind sight is always 20/20 and maybe I should have taken it yet on the other hand.... he loved his anvil and really used it up until he turned 80 so perhaps it's best if that anvil stays in the family. --Believe it or not.... I've seen both of the videos you added on jigs and.... I saved them.  There's a corresponding website, www.yesteryearforge.com. --Now that YouTube on the oak tree.... I hadn't seen that before. Fun. One thing though.... I think I need to stick to learning how to crawl well before I start walking and certainly before I start running. Soon as I've been "running" for a while.... I'll try flying (blacksmithing or casting).  Remember.... the 1st time I ever touched a MIG gun in my life was on May 23rd and I didn't exactly do all that great. Here's proof.... my beloved paperweight that I show off to everyone who comes over-----I go every week rain or shine.... usually on Thursdays for about 5 hours and am doing oodles better because of the one on one help I've been getting but.... big BUT.... I still haven't "walked" on my own yet. I'll get there.... patience my friends.... baby steps since I'm not exactly a "natural" to all of this like some people are.--It's stopped pouring here.... the dog is no longer hyperventilating and cowering under my chair shaking like a leaf from the thunder so I'm thinking it's time to get off the computer.... again. I need to whisk these little girls off to the zoo for the day before their parents come for them around dinner time. My how the summer has gone by so fast.... school starts the end of this week for my little pretties. Pssst.... the middle child wants to learn how to weld roller coasters. She's planning on taking shop classes soon as she gets to HS. I think she just might do it.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:I'm sure you know I'm poking fun at you. You've done remarkably well for the length of time you've been doing this. Seeing things that interest you is usually the way most of us get driven to learn or do something new. You're finding the same thing. At worst all you can do is try. If you never try, you never succeed. Many times we learn more from the failures of ourselves and others than we do from our accomplishments.I'm quite familiar with Yesteryear Forge. I actually spent about an hour talking to Payton from there at their booth at the ABANA conference on Thursday the 14th of this month. I spent an hour picking their brains on how they did a lot of the display items, using their toys and took plenty of picts with their blessing. Actually probably later this week I'm ordering their G2 fullering tool and their Versa jig bender. I'm not sure yet if I'll wait on the bias jig that goes with it. I love the look of the hooks when they are done on the "diamond".As I said though a good bit of this can be done cold, especially with small stock like 1/4" round and square. I want to say Yorkiepap here did a really great bender, but that might have been posted on another site he was also on for a bit. Extra leverage helps if the material isn't cold, but you can always slide a piece of pipe or tube over the long end to help stiffen the rod you are bending and give yourself more leverage. Maybe this weekend if I get a chance I'll did around and see if I have a fixed bender I made a while back and take some picts for you.Oh Piggies are gone now. I wanted to take picts of them at the fair, but I was too busy and then Sunday they had them loaded up already when I got there. I got a few at the house before we packed them up so I'll post one of those up even if they aren't the best picts in the dark barn. I had a couple of kids from the 4H Rabbit and Chicken clubs camped out with me at the fair watching me do the blacksmithing..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks  Eq.   I see some Christmas presents in the making.  My bride of 40+++ years asked for a cookbook holder 5 - 6 yrs ago (she's an absolutely fantastic in the kitchen).  Now I think she may get one.  Our  (her) wine rack has seen better days and I see possibilities their also.  We also have some impossible-to-buy-for relatives out on the left coast that would like something along those lines. Thanks for the pics.  If/when I make them I'll post pics.Bob

Reply:Bob_C> The cookbook stand is particularly nice. It even has weights to hold the pages down. I think I'd eliminate the scroll work on either side of the rooster though. Actually, I think I'd use a fleur de lis finial instead of a rooster. --It's got to be hard coming up with gift ideas after 40 years. Sheesh... I struggle and we're only at the 30 year mark. You get to a point where you buy what you need yourself as you need it and don't want anything else that needs to be dusted unless it serves a purpose. --Notsooldordum> cute use of old tires. --DSW> "Hmmm you are lusting after us here huh?... How's you husband feel about this?" Ummm... he knows I've got a "thang" for trees and vines so he's not so fine with me lusting after the project in your video or the blacksmithing or forging tools that would be required to make it. He said no more "lusting" for anything until we move somewhere with a pole barn...we're out of space to store anything!!!--"We'll convert you to the Dark side yet....Join us, and we will complete your training." I think y'all have converted me already.  I've got a scrap pile of metal that breeds at night while we're sleeping and a YouTube collection of DIY videos that has so many entries I have to scroll to find what I'm looking for. Incidentally.... my husband laughed out loud when he read that. He said he never in all his years imagined me "hanging" with a bunch of metalaholics. His friends are jealous. Their wives all want jewelry for presents while his wants scrap and steel ball bearings!!! --"This stuff is like crack once you get a little taste for free, you are hooked for life." Now you tell me. --"Actually I did buy the fullering tool, the versa jig and their bias jig.... I also found a seller on Fleabay that was selling just the larger portion of the bigger bending jig and bought that, so I pretty much did get it all." I knew you would.... those tools needed a forever shop to call their own. --There you go again dangling something in front of my face that I like.  I like that tree limb real well....dare I say it>>>? I "lust" for that tree limb. Reply:Well... this home is no exception.... we've got tons of wasted volume INSIDE the house and the more we dump off at GoodWill.... the more we have but not in the garage or in the little barn.... or for that matter.... up in the kids' old treehouse.
