Well guys I have this project I did recently that helped me a lot on learning welding.  Unfortunately it is specialized for a need I have.  It is a mechanical device called a Rock Jaw crusher.  I only needed to make a small one called an Assay, Jaw or Pitman crusher   A bigger device could be useful to others but I made this to mount on my Jeep's trailer hitch out West and run with a generator while prospecting on public land (BLM). I will be trying it out for real within a few months but it works great with the gallons of buckets of ore I have on hand. and building it Tutorial 1 to 3Unfortunately Hard Rock Gold is not very popular with most people because they do not know how to find it in the first place.  But just in case one of you happen to have an Eureka! moment here is the solution to the problem.Good prospectingbob
Reply:Nice build!! Speaking as an old retired crusher hand I would build a jack shaft drive to slow it down to about a 1/4 of it's present speed. I think you'd find the eccentric will last a lot longer. I'll also suggest two bolts to adjust the toggle, the pivoting plate at the bottom, and a toggle plate full width w/ matching seats to prevent twisting forces on the moving jaw plate.                               JMO,Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:No that was made and sold after some use to prospect a claim or twoHe used the money to finance a real mill setup to work that claim for a spellI have seen more money go into the ground than i think ever came out of the groundused to go prospecting myself once and a great while...found some interesting things down in those old mines but not much colorI'll have to take some pics of some of the things i have recovered out of themBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:ribGood work - I've always wanted to build a hobby version of what I worked on when I was a kid.http://autoline.info/sf/construction...484643500.htmlIts bigger brother - had 12 foot fly wheels - and would eat a rock the size of VW Bug.Opus

Reply:Yes  My cousin has horses and mentioned hard facing on their shoes but I could not find out much so I when with the heat treat. If it turns out I am lucky enough to wear the jaws out I will have to either learn it or find someone who can do it.  But that of course is undaunted optimism combined with too much wishful thinking.  Just getting out to the desert will be fun enough for me.bob

Reply:Knew a guy in Tonopah many years ago, his dad had a cat and loader and such. He said he made all his money mining the miners. "The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Guys I did not expect this much response.  I myself have been self employed all my life.  Your dads whether the made their fortunes or not were real American pioneers that were willing to take a chance.  That is the spirit of the free thinkers and entrepreneurs that made this country great.  I do believe I have found a home with this forum.bob
Reply:I'm sure you'll enjoy it here, Bob!! Is a ball mill the next project? I wasn't telling you how to build your jaw, just imparting knowledge I've gained from 32 yrs of working on them.                                       MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:rib - as a Nipper . . .Hard rock gold is in my past - I've been 5000' feet down.  Cone, wrapper, and jaw crushers: are high manganese steel, 12 to 14% and carbon, 1 to 1.25%.Crusher surfaces are 'built-up' with homogeneous filler - not hard-faced.   Hard Face is for abrasion - not impact.   Manganese steels: have paradoxical annealing, and hardening properties which should be studied. You are investing 'great labor' using inferior materials to shape your jaw surfaces, and they will not last . . . A cheap soure of good Mag-Steel: are worn-out cutting edges from heavy equipment - ie. Caterpillar . . .Opus
Reply:Bob could also use nicro-mang electrodes for build up.                                     MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
