Well I took the dive today and registered for a Welding I course at the local CC. Curriculum is 2 nights per week 3 hours each and rotating between shop time and theory. This course is only focused on stick welding and then the next semester if I decide to take it will be MIG and then TIG if I want. I found a few threads on this but figured I would see if anyone has done this recently and their opinion on it. From my understanding since I have zero experience with a welder some of the theory will help me get going. Thanks for the feedback!
Reply:You get what you put into it. Goodluck to ya. Welding will open up many doors for ya. I'm in my 5th semester at my local community college. We started out on flat plate, worked through 6010 and 7018, then horizontal, vertical and finished with overhead, with both rods, different brands. Then we moved to Flux core, worked through that and then gmaw.
Reply:Thanks - this semester is horizontal stick welding from what the instructor told me; then vertical and overhead next. Didn't know there was a difference - learning something already.
Reply:Yes sir. Goodluck to you. I've spent countless hours as well on this forum, priceless information here.

Reply:I've taken CC courses and found them invaluable! As far as night verses day, the instructors were flexible on allowing me to swing back and forth between days and nights as it was a learning experience not a career choice. I still completed and got College Credits for the courses.
Reply:Originally Posted by WNY_TomB.he asked about signing up for welding classes and i mentioned being aware of any refund policy.. it is not unusual to get a job and then cannot finish classes. it actually upset my wife more at throwing away $1200. for welding classes i never took cause i found a job when classes were held

Reply:Originally Posted by WNY_TomB.i signed up for night school classes and 10 years later signed up for more night school classes. it can help get a job but is no guarantee.  .but when i was offered a job working on 2nd shift i said to myself it is like taking night school on the job training classes where i am getting paid to work and be trained. i made $63,000 last year after 3.5 years at a new job. .just saying sometimes it is better to find any job that pays you to work and get on the job training. in my experience often community colleges are a business and like any business their interest is in selling you training that you have to pay a large amount of money for. i am not saying it is a scam but i am always wary of paying for anything to help get a job. best to understand risks especially the refund policy.usually finding people to work the evening or night shift is harder for companies and often they will hire less trained and experienced people and in return give them a job where they can get training and work experience. i would say do not turn down a job if it is not a day job often it is worth the inconvenience
Reply:Originally Posted by roadkillbobbI think your a little off based with that thought...if it was one of these technical schools( private) that promise you the world and a free set of tools..yes im on board with your feelings, but a community college at a reasonable cost.. no...and you might be quick to jump onto a job..you have to weigh would school get me a better job down the road alittle...all becomes a personal decision...
Reply:When I went to welding school, it was 5-days a week for 3-hours each day. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday were all shop. Tuesday, and Thursday was 1 1/2-hours of theory, and 1 1/2-hours of shop. Believe it or not, the theory really helps bring it all together. You can be struggling in the shop, and the instructor will make it all clear in the class room.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I agree WNY  TomB the last job I was on as an apprentice was a scaled down Nuclear Power Plant, never intended to go on line, just a testing facility. There must have been 30 union pipe welders on that job. I wanted to be a pipe welder in the worst way. These pipe welders really took a liking to me. Whenever they had a critical weld to make they sent their fitter to find me so I could watch. One of the top welders on site told me I would never be a welder, if I didn’t weld every day, all day long. Soon as I graduated my apprenticeship I moved to the North West. Just my luck, about 10,000 construction workers out of work. So I went to work in a Fab shop building nuclear waste tanks for 3-years. That is where I really learned to weld.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Thanks for all these replies everyone- this isn't to get a job in welding, just for me to be able to perform in the garage. I am thinking I could teach myself but thought the classes would help.

Reply:Originally Posted by bigbWell I will warn you now if you really get into it there will be a lot in your future. And I don't mean a job either. I mean several welders, plasma cutter, compressors, grinders, drill press, band saw, chop saw, cutting torch, welding hoods, big steel tables,  big diesel pickup and trailer to haul steel, bigger shop and so on.....
