We have been working on taking various welder qualifications of late and I just finished this 6G 6" sch 80 up and thought I would share (actually was asked to share). While it is not absolutely perfect, I am proud of it, especially considering I don't weld pipe everyday. I am not exactly sure of the amps but I believe the 6010 root was around 80 amps and 7018 around 110 amps. It has been fun practicing SMAW pipe but the sad thing is we don't weld our pipe SMAW everyday, the brass wants certs for bragging rights so here they are.-Jonathan Attached Images
Reply:Sorry the pics are out of order.
Reply:Pretty nice looking root pass ,but from here . It looks like a small gap  on the bottom  .Did you start on a tack weld ?
Reply:Superior w; hold off a minute on the bragging 'till you bend and show the coupons.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:gxbxc,My tacks were at 9 and 3. The bottom has always been my problem spot. I also didn't mention, the 6010 was down.docwelder,I am by no means "bragging" just showing what I did. I realize it can still fail bend test but....may the odds be ever in my favor. -Jonathan

Reply:Coming from the structural end of welding, for SMAW a lot of the contractors, or owners, (Port of, City of, State, and Fed) had us test on 6-G pipe. But the state test here is 3-G, and 4-G plate. For self shielded wire we always tested on 3-G, and 4-G plate.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Yes I use 2 tacks instead of 4. I would agree that 4 would be better but this is the technique I adopted and am used to. Yes the root and hot are both down hand. This is our procedure. It is amazing how many opinions there are for which direction. Per codes, one can do it either way, just depends on the WPS. I have been recently using 3/32" wheels for root pass clean up and it works ok. I do agree on the rounded wheel though.Thank you for the advise on the intermediate passes. I am not quite sure how to full apply holding the sides in this synario as all passes were straight stringers with no intentional weaving. Maybe I am just not seeing it yet though lol. I appreciate all the help I can get!-Jonathan
Reply:Your using 6010 all the way out? no 7018? Are you  using 5/32 rod for your outer passesLast edited by gxbxc; 09-12-2014 at 10:29 PM.
Reply:1/8" 6010 root and hot, 1/8" 7018 fill and cap. I actually bought some 5/32" 7018 yesterday at the LWS to give a try.-Jonathan
Reply:I just started my pipe class in school, just finished 2g, and i must say that frol what i can see your root and first few cover passes are spot on, good job man, good luck!
Reply:Thank you very much! I was especially proud of the fill passes. I probably burned 10-15 lbs of electrodes just practicing on a piecs of pipe getting the muscle memory down. I personally feel that did more good than using new coupons every time. Now I start the fun ones, 2" XXS SA106 SMAW and GTAW to ASME 9 specs. I did my first practice piece yesterday and it actually was not terrible but not passable. I am a little more nervous about these as they are x-ray and bend, not to mention each one is almost $500 so if I fail one it will get expensive fast!!-Jonathan
Reply:Whooaa, definitely share some pics of that  once you get it down!

Reply:I passed!! My test piece was used for our PQR/WPS. I sent up 4 tests and passed all of them. That is one load off my mind. Now to see if the rest pass or bust!-Jonathan
Reply:Looks nice!
